Tigers offense explodes for 8-0 win over Worthington

MARSHALL – THE Marshall girls soccer team pulled away early in their 8-0 win over Worthington Thursday night. After struggling in their opener against Waseco, the Tigers have outscored their last two opponents 11-0.

Abby Wing scored two of the Tigers’ four first-half goals. She scored her first while Marshall already held a 1-0 lead. Averi Schneider dribbled the ball down towards the corner before crossing it up over the middle of the box as she fell to the ground. The ball landed by the center of the box, yet nobody made a move on it at first. Worthington appeared to think play had been stopped, but Wing had the presence of mind to collect the ball and send it into the bottom corner of the net to extend Marshall’s lead to two.

Wing scored her second goal towards the end of the first half, when she collected another nice cross from Schneider after the opposing goalie batted it away from the net. After fighting through some traffic, Wing was able to chip the ball about eight yards out from the goal over the keeper into the net, giving the Tigers a healthy 4-0 cushion going into the break.

Depth was a major strength for the Tigers in this game. Six different players scored goals. Among those players was Katie Gordon, who was one of three junior varsity players who participated in the game due to injuries in the Tigers’ lineup.

“We had two girls injured from last game so we called up some girls from JV. They delivered, they worked well with the rest of the team, so we can trust the girls from JV for the rest of the season,” head coach Jose Losada-Montero said.

Marissa Talamantes scored the first goal of the game just five minutes in. Worthington got called for a hand ball on a Marshall corner kick attempt, setting up a penalty kick. Talamantes stepped up and sent a ground-through ball into the bottom right corner of the net. The goal was Talamantes third in the last two games.

Schneider was one of Marshall’s key contributors. She scored a goal herself, but her primary value came from her crosses, as she assisted another two.

“I think instead of only shooting when she gets to the line, she’s trying to cross more balls,” Losada-Montero said. “That’s good for the team because the whole team is always going up, so those crosses always find a finisher.”

Hannah Gordon contributed a pair of goals as well. She increased the Tigers’ lead to 3-0 when she recovered a loose ball in the center of the box and hooked it right past the post. Her second goal came 10 minutes into the second half and put the game out of reach once and for all.

Following a sprained ankle in her last game and some uncertainty regarding her ability to play against Worthington, Maddy Van Keulen came into the game off the bench and scored a goal in the second half.

Marshall (2-1) will play their next game Tuesday, when they take on New Ulm at home.

Starting at $3.95/week.
