Marshall returns to the win column against Jackson County Central

MARSHALL – The Marshall girls volleyball team looked like a well-oiled machine on their home court against Jackson County Central Tuesday night. The Tigers won 3-0 and looked stronger than ever after losing their first match of the season in the Southwest Invitational Sunday morning.
Randi Wendorff and Leah Jones set the tone for the Tigers up front. Their hard-hit spikes routinely ended up nearly landing on the second-floor track from their sheer velocity. Wendorff finished with eight kills, Jones had a team-high 14, and each contributed a block.
The Tigers got off to a hot start in the first set until the Huskies called a timeout. From there, JCC went on an 8-7 run. Still, Marshall’s hot start gave them some leeway, and they went on to win the set 25-14.
“It felt like there wasn’t much pace to the match out there,” Marshall head coach Dan Westby said of the early struggles. “We like to have things at a little bit quicker pace. Once we got going, we had a nice run to end set one and carried that momentum into set two, and had a pretty convincing win there.”
JCC could hardly get a point after the Tigers got rolling in set two. The Huskies scored two of the first three points, but it was all downhill from there, as Marshall went on to win the set 25-11.
Caitlyn Christianson and Kennedy Drake contributed some outstanding defensive play for the Tigers. Christianson led the team in digs with 13 and Drake had another nine, as well as a pair of aces.
The Tigers never seemed to feel any pressure in a 25-15 third set win. They led the set wire to wire, largely due to the play of Brooke Andries.
“Andries came in and gave us a really nice spark in set three,” Westby said. “I think she was perfect in terms of hitting.”
The only part of their game the Tigers seemed to struggle with was serving. They got plenty of aces, but both teams made serving errors throughout the game. Still, Westby did not seem too concerned about these errors.
“We like to be aggressive from the serve. When you operate that way, you’re going to have errors,” Westby said. “The good news is that the errors were deep off the court rather than short into the net. That was the good news, but there’s certainly some stuff we need to clean up.”
The Marshall Tigers (9-1) will head out on the road to face Alexandria Thursday at 7:15.
