COTTONWOOD — Looking to make its fifth-straight team state tournament appearance, the Lakeview boys golf team is approaching the 2026 season with high standards of continuing its ongoing success. The girls team also heads into the season with a full group of returners with hopes of reaching new heights as well.

Across both teams, rosters look similar compared to last year as the Lakers aim to retain their talent while also building upon it more.

“For the boys and the girls, they have full rosters this year, so just looking at being able to continue what we’ve been doing well in the past, and being able to continue that trend,” head coach Sarah Schultz said. “[We’re] looking to see if they can work their way to winning the conference, and seeing if they can make it back to state.”

The Laker boys have built up a reputation over the last handful of seasons, winning the section championship and competing at the Class A state tournament for four consecutive seasons. Despite losing a pair of key seniors, the hopes of reaching the same success remains.

Lakeview finished in eighth place overall as a team at last year’s state tournament, as well as in 2024. The Lakers were state champions in 2023, and took fourth in 2022.

Impressively, the Lakers bettered their score by 21 strokes from 2024’s 701, and carded a 680 in last season’s tournament.

“They would love to go again [to state]. They’ve already been talking about it,” Schultz said. “I just do think that the competition is going to be a little harder, and that we need to have some scores [like] in the 40s to be able to compete with that.”

On those state tournament teams was Carson Boe, who also competed individually at state for five-straight seasons, and graduated last year. He left with a decorated Laker career, medaling three times in a row at state in the top-5 with a fourth-place finish last season, second in 2024 and third in 2023. Boe also placed 11th in 2022, and 22nd in 2021.

Lane Arends graduated alongside Boe last season, who also played a big role in the team’s successes. He finished the state tournament last season in 36th individually, 22nd in 2024 and 10th in 2023.

Despite the boys team losing Boe and Arends, their impact they have left has been felt and is used as motivation for this year’s team.

“I would notice the biggest difference this year is that the boys have really had to be the leaders now. Last year, those two [Boe and Arends] really helped drive the team, but now they are the top,” Schultz said. “They have to be the ones that have to step up and get those low scores to be able to lead the team.”

Rounding out the Lakers in last year’s state tournament, Ledgen Javens placed 78th, Landon Teske took 82nd, and Trevor Tusberg came in 85th while Koven Neuman placed 88th. All of whom are back again this season with their years of postseason experience.

Schultz noted Javens, Teske, Tusberg and Neuman all as leaders for the team this season.

Neuman, Teske and Tusberg represent Lakeview’s senior class this season across both teams. The girls team does not hold a senior this year.

On the girls side, Lakeview returns nearly the identical group this season with juniors Lauren Boe, Jersey Stensrud, Allison Isaacs and sophomore Nora Forslund. The Lakers graduated Caitlynn Hedman last year.

Lauren Boe will look to be a key contributor to the team this year, and led Lakeview in the section tournament last season with a 10th-place finish, just missing the mark of earning a spot in the state tournament as the top-5 individuals not on the winning team get a berth.

Both Lakeview teams are off to a strong start this season and moving in a positive direction. The boys and girls swept the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton meet on April 20.

“There is a lot of talent. They can all have shot very well, [but] we just need them to shoot very well each time. There is some competition out there within our conference this year, so just making sure that they come ready to go for each meet,” Schultz said.

Gavin Gregoire and Javens led the boys’ team with a fourth and fifth-place finish individually, carding a 40 and 41, respectively. The team took first place with a 169, two strokes ahead of Canby’s 171. Teske also came in sixth, as did Tusberg in eighth, while Neuman and Teske rounded out Lakeview in 12th and 19th, respectively.

In the girls’ meet, the team carded a 214 to come out on top, three strokes ahead of RTR at 217. Lauren Boe led the way in fifth place individually with a 49, while Stensrud, Forslund and Isaacs all placed in the top-10 in sixth, eighth and ninth, respectively.

“I think all of them are certainly getting used to playing at the varsity level. The girls are four returning varsity players, and the boys we have four returning as well, so we’ve added two to the varsity roster,” Schultz said. “But, they’ve fit right in, and it doesn’t seem to faze them that it’s a little higher level of competition.”

As a majority of the golf season will be packed into the next few weeks, Lakeview will continue to strive for consistency and maintain its strong performances to meet its postseason goals and expectations.

“It feels good [to be back]. They know what to expect, and they know what they need to do,” Schultz said. “It’s not like we have to start over. We can just kind of continue where we left off and look to improve.”

Starting at $3.95/week.
