MARSHALL — The Marshall baseball team wanted to end a grueling stretch of playing five games in five days on a strong note against Worthington on Tuesday and keep the momentum going after a hard-fought win against Luverne the day before. Using its patience at the plate and a solid rotation on the mound, Marshall would score in every inning on its way to a 10-0 victory in six innings at Legion Field.
“We played well,” Marshall coach Chace Pollock said. “We scored in every inning and hit the ball well and put some pressure on their defense and I’m proud of our performance.”
Marshall jumped out to an early lead, getting a single by Andrew Wallen and a double from Connor Neubeck before Lincoln Graven reached on an error to make it 1-0 after one. Marshall wasn’t done there, as Jon Gruhot and Zach Leibfried got back-to-back doubles and Tyler Maeyaert reached on an error to plate two runs in the second and push it to 3-0.
While Wallen found his groove on the mound for MHS, the offense continued to provide run support at the plate, with Graven getting a single and Charlie Jacobson smacking a double before Talan Plante and Gruhot brought in runs on an error and a fielder’s choice, respectively, to make it 5-0 after three. In the next trip to the plate, Neubeck and Graven connected on consecutive RBI singles to extend their advantage to 7-0.
After a 1-2-3 inning by Worthington, Marshall kept up the offense, as Plante got a leadoff single before coming around to score on an error to make it 8-0. An inning later, MHS would load the bases with no outs before a wild pitch and an RBI single by Plante ended the game and sealed the 10-0 victory.
Graven led Marshall with three hits and two RBIs while Neubeck and Plante each added two hits and an RBI and Gruhot and Leibfried each had a hit and an RBI.
Pollock said their key offensively was their ability to stay patient in their at-bats and get a solid connection on the ball.
“We were hitting the ball hard,” Pollock said. “The guys did a nice job and their pitcher had a good mix with a good slow curveball and then the fastball and our guys did a nice job of staying back and staying through the baseball.”
Wallen earned the win on the mound, going three innings while allowing no runs on one hit and struck out two. Parker Schmitt threw the final three frames, allowing no runs on one hit and struck out eight.
Pollock said both Wallen and Schmitt attacked the zone early and also did a good job of battling back to get outs.
“They threw strikes to start and that’s half the battle there,” Pollock said. “They got ahead and we were able to finish them off; Parker went three innings and had eight strikeouts, so definitely a good day for him on the mound, and Andrew came out and commanded the tone from the start and did a nice job as well.”
Up next
Marshall (7-5) will face Fairmont on the road on Friday at 4 p.m. before taking on Mankato East at home on Saturday at noon. Pollock said they will take some time to rest before gearing up for some more challenging matchups this weekend.
“This is our fifth game in five days, so we’re going to rest up here and enjoy a day off and then be ready for Fairmont on Friday who is undefeated and then we get East who beat New Prague earlier this year, so it’s going to be challenging again,” Pollock said.
