MARSHALL — With a quick signature, the next step to Megan Wegner’s athletic career was complete. The Marshall senior signed her National Letter of Intent on Tuesday to play basketball at Bethany Lutheran College.

Wegner said it feels good to finally have this day come and officially be committed.

“It feels really good, I’m excited for what opportunities come my way,” Wegner said. “I think this is the perfect college for me.”

Wegner said what drew her to BLC was the feel of the community and the ability to continue to play basketball.

“I just love the area; the town is larger than Marshall but not as big as a city and the class size was only about 700 which I love because then I can get personal with my professors,” Wegner said. “The basketball team also wanted me and I wanted to take that opportunity because I want to keep playing.”

The past few years, Wegner has been a key contributor to Marshall’s success on the hardwood in both volleyball and basketball. This past winter, Wegner scored 87 total points, collected 52 rebounds and dished out 84 assists. Wegner attributed that success to the impact her coaches and teammates have had on her. She said her coaches have taught her a lot of lessons on and off the floor and is grateful for all they’ve done for her.

“They have taught me a lot of valuable life lessons and overall have been really great,” Wegner said. “I’ve been with them since freshman year and I’m going to miss them so much because they made such a big impact on my life.”

Wegner added her teammates have always been there for her, especially fellow seniors Danya Estrada and Ashleigh Steinbach and junior Brooke Andries.

“They’ve always been there for me,” Wegner said. “Danya, Ashleigh and Brooke especially have been here since C-squad when we were in eighth grade and Brooke was in seventh grade, so I’m just glad to see us all up here now and we’re playing with each other.”

Wegner said she’s planning to major in exercise science with a minor in psychology and a possible second minor in health and communications. Going into next year, Wegner said she’s looking forward to another season of playing basketball and overall the atmosphere of college.

“I think the basketball season and just kind of the independence of being in college,” Wegner said. “I think I’m looking forward to that the most.”
