PREP VOLLEYBALL: MPS recognizes Westby for national coaching award
MARSHALL — Marshall head volleyball coach Dan Westby was singled out for recognition by the Marshall School Board on Monday afternoon. During the Tiger Spotlight portion of the school board’s regular meeting, they featured Westby being named one of the American Volleyball Association’s Region Coaches of the Year.
“Congratulations to Dan, who was unable to join us tonight, because I’m sure he’s coaching,” said MPS Superintendent Jeremy Williams. “We’re very excited. We do have a recognition that we will get to him.”
Westby was awarded the Region Coach of the Year honor after the Tiger girls won the state AAA volleyball championship, Williams said. Only 37 other volleyball coaches in the nation received the award.
“Mr. Westby has had a long record of girls’ volleyball coaching success for the Tigers,” Williams said. “The 2021 championship was Mr. Westby’s seventh title during his 18 years in Marshall. This seventh championship ties a state record.”
“That’s quite a record,” said School Board Chairman Jeff Chapman.
“Dan has a legendary record of coaching success,” said MPS Activities Director Rick Purrington. “His teams have made history by practicing hard, playing hard, and winning with class. Our entire community is proud of Coach Westby and this deserving, national recognition.”
