SMSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: SMSU hits the road for a pair before bringing in the New Year

MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s basketball team (7-2, 4-1 NSIC) hits the road for a pair of games before the holiday break, going north to Concordia-St. Paul (7-2, 3-2) on Friday before going to Mankato to face Minnesota State (9-0, 5-0) on Saturday.
•The Mustangs will tip-off at CSP on Friday at 7:30 p.m. before a 5:30 Saturday tip-off against MSU.

Concordia-
St. Paul history
•SMSU and Concordia-St. Paul meet for the 61st time with CSP owning the series, holding a 43-17 advantage since meeting for the first time in 1974.
•The teams split a pair of games last season in Marshall, with SMSU winning on Jan. 30 58-50 before CSP defeated the Mustangs 68-63 on Jan. 31.
•Prior to last season, CSP had won 38 of the previous 40 matchups dating back to the 2002-03 season.
•SMSU head coach Tom Webb is 1-9 all-time versus CSP.
Minnesota
State history
•SMSU and Minnesota State will meet for the 65th time with MSU leading 43-21 in a series that started in 1970.

•SMSU has won four of the last six meetings since the 2018-19 season.

•The Golden Bears finished last season 11-6 overall and 9-5 in the NSIC, losing 71-70 to Bemidji State in the NSIC quarterfinals.
•CSP was picked to finish ninth in the NSIC and sixth in the NSIC South.
•Head coach Amanda Johnson is in her seventh season leading the charge at CSP, compiling a 95-67 record after taking over as interim head coach on Jan. 1, 2016.
•The Golden Bears’ 2021-22 squad features one senior, two juniors, three sophomores, two redshirt freshmen and five freshmen.
•Guard Riley Wheatcraft is the Golden Bears’ top scorer, averaging 13.1 points per game while collecting six rebounds per game and 16 total steals.

•The Mavericks finished last season 9-7 overall and 8-5 in the NSIC, losing to St. Cloud State 70-68 in the NSIC Tournament quarterfinals.

•Head coach Emilee Thiesse is in her 10th season at the helm for Minnesota State, coming in with a 257-99 record.
