MCC wins 3A South meet behind 15 championship qualifiers
LUVERNE — The Murray County Central boys track and field team dominated the 3A South Subsection Championships on Thursday. The Rebels will now send 15 individual boys and three relay teams to next week’s Section 3A championship meet.
The Rebels paced the eight-team boys field with 186 points, beating out Luverne’s 108 and Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton’s 104 to top the podium. Tracy-Milroy-Balaton also placed fifth with 77 points and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton placed seventh with 35.5 points to edge out Pipestone by a half-point.
On the girls side, Luverne topped the team podium with 205 points, followed by Hills-Beaver Creek’s 122 and SWC/E’s 99. RTR also placed fourth with 74, MCC took sixth with 50 and TMB finished last with 27 points.
MCC’s lone individual subsection champion was Caleb Rosenbrook, who won the boys pole vault with a height of 12-03. The Rebels’ 4×800-meter relay team of Brayden Gilb, Beckett Stelter, Henry Carlson and Alexander Betz also placed first.
MCC had a number of boys who earned multiple section final qualifications. Parker Olson advances in the 200 meters, 110 hurdles and long jump, Lucas Kuball moves on in the 100 and 200 meters and the long jump, Tyler Reith in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and Dylan Gilbertson in the triple jump and 300 hurdles. Kuball will also be competing in the Rebels’ 4×400-meter relay and Gilbertson in the 4×200.
Joee Thooft had a big day for the RTR girls, placing third in the 200 meters and the long jump and fifth in the 100 and high jump.
Eli Lightfoot earned a pair of first-place finishes for the TMB boys in the long jump and triple jump, and Summer Labrune represented the RTR girls with a first-place finish in the 1600 meters. Lightfoot also advances with the Panthers’ 4×100-meter relay team after their fourth-place finish on Friday.
MCC’s Charley Holm qualified for the section championships in the 100 meters, the pole vault and the long jump, as well as the 4×400-meter relay.
TMB’s Raelynn and Linaye Schreier each earned multiple section championship qualifications on the girls side. Raelynn took sixth in the 100 and third in the 100 hurdles, while Linaye placed fifth in the triple jump and seventh in the 100 hurdles. Both are also members of the Panthers’ fifth-place 4×100-meter relay squad.
Auden Ortiz advances for TMB in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles.
The advancing athletes next compete at the Section 3A championship meet at Pipestone Area High School on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Lakeview boys finish as 3A Central runners-up, girls take 3rd
REDWOOD FALLS — The Lakeview track and field team had 10 boys and 10 girls individuals qualify for the section championship meet at Thursday’s 3A Central Subsection Championships, also advancing four girls relay teams and two boys en route to a pair of podium finishes.
The Lakeview boys finished as runners-up in the eight-team meet with 117 points, trailing only Redwood Valley’s 131, while the girls’ 123.5 points were good for third place behind BOLD/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart’s 139 and Redwood Valley’s 136.5.
Wabasso’s boys team also placed third with 82 points, Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central placed sixth with 68 points, and Canby/Minneota and Yellow Medicine East rounded out the field with 59 and 51 points, respectively.
Canby/Minneota’s girls also placed fourth with 110.5 points, followed directly by Wabasso’s 53 and WWG/RRC’s 51. Yellow Medicine East finished last with 32.5 points.
Jackson Staab won the discus and the shot put for Lakeview boys while Broden Stensrud did the same in the wheelchair division of the event. Adeline Louwagie also won the girls discus and took fourth in the shot put.
Tate Remiger won the boys 1600 and placed third in the 800, while Thane Matthys earned a subsection win in the pole vault and placed fourth in the 300 hurdles.
In addition to Louwagie, the Lakeview girls also had Takoda Justsen qualify for the section final in multiple events after placing second in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the 300.
For Canby/Minneota, Mya Pesek, Ashlynn Winkelman and Natalie Reppe each earned multiple section final qualifications. Winkelman won the 300 hurdles and was the triple-jump runner-up, Pesek was the runner-up in the 1600 while placing third in the 3200, and Reppe placed seventh in the 400 and third in the long jump.
Tallen Merritt gave the Lancers a first-place finish in the 400 and aided the boys 4×800-mmeter relay team to a win, and the Canby/Minneota girls won the 4×200- and 4×400-meter relays.
Wabasso had a pair of girls and a pair of boys earn first-place finishes. Elsie Leopold and Liz Morin won the girls 800 and triple jump, respectively, while the boys had Andrew Morin win the 3200 meters and Tyson Lightfoot win the 300 hurdles.
WWG/RRC was led by wins from Bowen Hesse and Grant Binnebose in the 110-meter hurdles and triple jump, respectively, while Miranda Mischke topped the girls high jump field for the Chargers.
Tristynn Justesen won the girls pole vault for Lakeview.
The qualifying athletes will return to the track on Thursday for the Section 3A Championship Meet at Pipestone Area High School at 2 p.m.
