PREP HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Marshall boys, girls get tripped up by New Ulm

MARSHALL — After falling to Luverne in a tight overtime game on Tuesday, the Marshall boys hockey team looked to bounce back at home against New Ulm. The Eagles had other ideas, though, and used a trio of goals in the second period to break a 1-1 tie and earn a 6-1 victory on Thursday at the Red Baron Arena and Expo.

Marshall coach Michael Weiss said he felt they got out to a solid start, but committed too many penalties, especially in the second period, and it hurt them.

“I thought we came out of the gates pretty well, we were moving well and forechecking tough and we were really a tough team to play against in that first period, but we just got away from some of those things that were helping us,” Weiss said. “In the second we took too many penalties to hang around in the game.”

Marshall jumped out to an early lead in the first period when Corbin Beernaert found the back of the net on the power play on the assist by Logan Deutz to make it 1-0 with 8:36 left in the frame, but New Ulm answered with a goal with 26 seconds to go in the period to even things up at 1-1 after one.

The second period was all New Ulm, with the Eagles scoring with 6:07 left in the frame to take a 2-1 lead before finding the back of the net on a power play with 4:05 left. New Ulm wasn’t done there, getting another power-play goal about a minute later to push its lead to 4-1 after two.

In the third period, New Ulm scored on another power-play goal with 12:19 left before getting a short-handed goal with 9:35 to play to bring it to the 6-1 final.

New Ulm outshot Marshall 30-20 on the game. Gavin Welsh recorded 24 saves in net for Marshall.

Up next

Marshall (1-2) will face Windom Area at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Weiss said their key takeaway is just maintaining the strong level of play they saw in the first period against New Ulm for all three periods.

“I think in that first period we skated with them and we controlled a lot of the play and I think it’s important for our team to see that we can play with some of the top teams in our section and we just need to do it for three periods,” Weiss said.
