AREA SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall softball drops pair of games in Section 2AAA tournament

MANKATO — The No. 8 Marshall softball team saw its season come to an end on Thursday in the Section 2AAA tournament, falling to No. 1 Mankato West 11-1 in five innings and 12-4 to No. 5 New Ulm.

Against Mankato West, Ashleigh Steinbach led Marshall with two hits while Randi Wendorff added an RBI triple. Olivia Houseman took the loss in the circle, allowing nine runs on 10 hits.

Against New Ulm, Leah Schaefer led Marshall with three hits and two RBI while Abby Wendorff added two hits, Taylor Ariasola had a hit, Steinbach had a hit and an RBI and Lauren Wherry had an RBI.

Morgan Bjella took the loss in the circle, going 2 2/3 innings while allowing 10 runs on 10 hits and struck out two.

With the loss, Marshall ends its season with an 11-11 record and graduates three seniors in Aubrey Bjella, Kayla Polejewski and Abby Wendorff.

DAWSON — The Marshall amateur baseball team defeated Dawson 15-2 in seven innings on Wednesday.

Mason Penske led Marshall with three hits, including a home run, and four RBI while Zach Olsen added two hits and an RBI and Ryan Schwagel had a hit and two RBI. Peyton Grant, Logan Terfehr and Rusty Swanson each had a hit and an RBI while Logan Tomasek and Zach Olson each hit a home run and combined for four RBI.

Swanson earned the win on the mound, going seven innings while allowing two runs on six hits and struck out seven.

Braden Thompson and Esten Weber led Dawson with two hits each while Derek Gritmacker added a hit and an RBI, Braxton Thompson had a hit and Josh Staab had an RBI.

Braxton Thompson took the loss on the mound, going three innings while allowing four runs on three hits and struck out three.

Marshall (4-6) will play in the Pepsi Invite tournament this weekend in Pipestone, starting today with an 8:45 p.m. game against Pipestone while Dawson (2-3) will face Benson on the road today at 7:30 p.m.

Milroy Irish 10, Adrian 3

MILROY — The Milroy Irish amateur baseball team defeated Adrian 10-3 on Wednesday.

Brady Lanoue led the Irish with three hits, including a home run while Ben Heichel added three hits and four RBI.

Beau Priegnitz earned the victory on the mound, going five innings while allowing two runs and struck out five.

The Irish (8-2) will face Minneota at home on Friday at 7 p.m.

Milroy Yankees 9, Wabasso 2

MILROY — The Milroy Yankees amateur baseball team defeated Wabasso 9-2 on Wednesday.

Brian Dolan led the Yankees with three hits and four RBI while Matt Bauer added two hits and two RBI, Andy Schmidt had two hits and an RBI and Branden Flock had two hits.

Josh Hadley earned the victory on the mound, going six innings while allowing two runs on four hits and struck out three.

Samuel Guetter led Wabasso with two hits while Kyle Lechner, Bryant Haas and Cole Frericks each added a hit and Kenric Baune had two RBI.

Lechner took the loss on the mound, going six innings while allowing five runs on seven hits and struck out three.

The Yankees (6-2) will face Brookings (S.D.) on the road today at 7:30 p.m. while Wabasso (0-5) will face Raymond on the road on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
