SMSU TRACK AND FIELD: Mustangs compete at NSIC Championships this weekend

MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s and men’s track and field teams will travel to Duluth this Thursday, Friday and Saturday competing at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Championships at Malosky Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth.

This year’s championship will get underway on Thursday with the decathlon and heptathlon starting at 12 p.m. The decathlon and heptathlon resume on Friday at 9 a.m. with the running events starting at 10 a.m. and field events beginning at 10:45 a.m. On Saturday, field events will open at 10 a.m. with the running events starting at 1 p.m.

All-NSIC performers consist of the top three place winners in each event and the members of the top two relay teams from the meet.

For the SMSU women’s team, senior Rebecca Manteuffel enters the meet with the third longest mark this season amongst NSIC competitors in the discus with an NCAA provisional toss of 49.94m. She also has the sixth longest toss in the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark 14.29m.

Sophomore Isatu Shirek ranks seventh in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.52 and ninth in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:03.77.

On the men’s side, senior Connor Wigand enters the championship with the fourth best mark this spring in the shot put at 16.55m and seventh in the discus at 48.07m.

Freshman McKallen Smith is third in the high jump with an NCAA provisional mark of 2.08m, while sophomore Renald Pierre enters the meet with the third fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles 14.58.

Senior Isaiah Nelson is sixth in the triple jump at 14.10m, with freshman Jed Hansen ranking ninth in the pole vault at 4.35m.

A total of 15 schools will compete for the 2021 women’s championship, while the men’s championship field will include 12 teams. At the last championship conducted in 2019, the SMSU women’s team finished 10th, while the men’s team finished 10th.

At the 2019 championship, Manteuffel earned All-NSIC honors winning the discus and placing second in the shot put.
