MARSHALL — With only a few home games left on its regular season schedule, the Marshall baseball team wanted to make sure its 11 seniors were honored in winning fashion. Marshall did just that and relied on several of its veteran leaders to guide MHS to its 10th victory of the season with a 6-3 win against Windom Area on Monday at Legion Field.

Marshall coach Chace Pollock said while they were able to come away with the win, he felt they had to battle a lot throughout the game and credited Windom Area for challenging them, especially on defense.

“It’s never a bad day when you win and I thought we battled through some things and give Windom a lot of credit, they did a nice job of hitting,” Pollock said.

MHS jumped out to a quick lead in its first at-bat, as Cole Felcyn connected on a two-out RBI double before Brock Schultz smacked a line drive over the left-field fence for his first career home run and give Marshall a 3-0 advantage after one.

Windom Area wouldn’t go down without a fight, though, and after a scoreless second inning, was able to get on the board with a trio of singles to make it 3-1. The Eagles then used a double and a single in the fourth to get to within one at 3-2, but Marshall responded in the bottom half of the frame with a double by Charlie Jacobson before he later scored on a wild pitch to push the lead back to two runs at 4-2.

Windom Area then got three straight singles to lead off the fifth, plating another run in the process, to draw to within one again at 4-3, but that was the closest the Eagles got. In the bottom half of the sixth, Schultz and Jacobson drew walks for Marshall before advancing on a sacrifice by Jack Bly. AJ Toulouse then brought in a run on a sacrifice fly before Mitchell Bouwman connected on a RBI single to make it 6-3. The Eagles had an opportunity to get on the board in the top of the seventh with consecutive walks but Bouwman got out of the jam with a flyout, strikeout and lineout to end the game.

Felcyn led Marshall with two hits and an RBI while Connor Neubeck added two hits, Schultz had a home run and two RBI, Bouwman had a hit and an RBI, Josh Baker and Jacobson each had a hit and Toulouse had an RBI.

Baker earned the win on the mound, going five innings while allowing three runs on 11 hits and struck out seven. Bouwman tossed the final two innings, striking out one.

Saluting the seniors

This year’s seniors are: Jaden Pearcy, Chase Douglas, Baker, Felcyn, Toulouse, Bouwman, Bly, Jacob Hughes, Schultz, Zach Allen and Bensen Kuecker. Pollock said each one of them have provided a lot to the program throughout the years and they’ll be sorely missed next season.

“This is a big group for us. There’s 11 of them out there and they mean a lot,” Pollock said. “They’ve had a lot of success playing baseball and it’s been a blast to coach them. I love every one of those kids and it’s going to be sad when they’re not here anymore.”

Up next

Marshall (10-3) will face Luverne at home on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Going into the final stretch of the regular season, Pollock said a key takeaway for them is to improve on their at-bats.

“I think we’ve got to work on our hitting,” Pollock said. “I think we’ve got to hit better than what we did today if we want to go somewhere.”
