Marshall school district not renewing contract of gymnastics coach McFarquhar

MARSHALL — During the Marshall school board meeting on Monday, the board approved a resolution not to renew the contract of gymnastics coach Larvita McFarquhar. McFarquhar was hired before the 2017-18 season.

The resolution said McFarquhar’s one-year contract expired at the end of last school year and “is not continuing in nature” and both the School District’s Activities Director and Superintendent thought that the non-renewal was “in the best interests of the program and the school district.”

In a video posted on her Facebook page, McFarquhar said she was fired after receiving a letter last week for not wearing a face mask. McFarquhar talked about speaking up for her rights and the rights of others, including her daughters.

“For all of those of you calling me a ‘Karen’ I didn’t know speaking up for my rights, my daughters rights and rights of others is considered being a ‘Karen’. I thought that we as Americans had the right to speak up for each and every one of us. I am here at the district office because last week I got a letter stating that I am no longer able to be the high school head coach of the gymnastics team because I cannot wear a mask,” McFarquhar said. “If you guys are OK with the governor shutting down my business and other small businesses, what kind of America are we in? If you’re OK with kids being denied access to school even though they have an exemption or even if they didn’t have an exemption, and you’re OK with that, again what kind of America are we living in?”

Starting at $3.95/week.
