PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Whyte scores four goals as Marshall rolls past Willmar

WILLMAR — The Marshall boys hockey team used a trio of goals in the first and third periods — including a four-goal game by Bryson Whyte — to highlight a 7-2 victory over Willmar on Tuesday.

The Tigers jumped on the scoreboard right away, as Jared Reinsma and Bryson Whyte found Joe Archbold for the goal to make it 1-0. Whyte wasn’t done there, though, as he got a pair of shots past the Willmar goaltender, with the second one being assisted from Archbold, to extend Marshall’s lead to 3-0 after one.

Marshall then went up 4-0 in the second thanks to a goal from Tristan VanDeVere on the assist from Blake Kruse before the Cardinals answered with a couple of goals in the frame to draw to within two. But the Tigers broke out the offense in the final period, as Whyte connected with the back of the net on the assist from Kaleb Welvaert for a hat trick before Sean Nwaiga scored on the assist from Kruse and Archbold to make it 6-2. Whyte then sealed his strong performance with a fourth goal to bring it to the 7-2 final.

Marshall outshot Willmar 45-25 on the game. Dominik Caspers earned the victory in net for the Tigers, stopping 23 shots.
