SMSU VOLLEYBALL: Mustangs move up to No. 11 in weekly AVCA poll

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team (13-6, 7-4 NSIC), tabbed the No. 11 spot in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Division II weekly poll released on Monday afternoon.

SMSU is 13-6 overall and 7-4 in the conference after a 2-1 week, which began with a five-set loss to, then-ranked, No. 11 Wayne State on Tuesday, only to finish with a 2-0 weekend homestead with a sweep over Bemidji State on Friday night and a four-set victory over Minnesota Crookston on Saturday afternoon.

SMSU has been ranked in the Top 25 for 183 consecutive polls, dating back to Sept. 5, 2006.

SMSU is one of eight NSIC schools ranked in this week’s Top 25 with Northern State leading the way, tied at No. 3 with Washburn. Followed by Minnesota Duluth at No. 5, Concordia-St. Paul at No. 7, Wayne State moved to No. 8, then SMSU at No. 11, St. Cloud State at No. 13, Winona State at No. 17, and Upper Iowa at No. 21.

Minnesota State and Sioux Falls are both mentioned as receiving votes.

Southwest Minnesota State prepares for yet another tough weekend series, opening with a 6 p.m. match this Friday at No. 13 St. Cloud State at Halenbeck Hall, followed by a 4 p.m. in the Romano Gymnasium this Saturday at No. 5 Minnesota Duluth. The Mustangs will also travel to Sioux Falls on Thursday, Oct. 31 to face Sioux Falls before returning home to host Augustana on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m.
