BLAINE – The Marshall girls hockey team continued its strong play in the Schwan’s Cup Tournament on Thursday with a 4-1 victory over Green Bay Area. With the win, the Tigers advanced to the American Open Division Championship today.

It’s also the first time in program history that Marshall will play in the championship in the Schwan’s Cup.

The Tigers were able to get out to a good start in the first period when Kaitlyn Timm got the assist from Leah Schaefer and put it in the back of the net to give Marshall an early 1-0 lead. Marshall quickly added to that advantage, this time getting a goal from Sydney Mauch on the assist from Tessa Gannott and Oliva Peterson to make it 2-0 Tigers with 8:35 left to play in the first. Green Bay Area would respond, however, scoring with just three seconds remaining in the opening frame to cut the Tigers’ lead to 2-1 after one.

In the second, Marshall was able to find an answer of its own, as Timm found Mauch, who then put one past the Green Bay Area goaltender on the power play to extend the Tigers lead to 3-1. Another goal would be scored in the closing seconds of the frame, but this time it was Marshall’s turn as Timm connected with the back of the net with just 0.9 left on the clock on the assist from Logan Sherman on the power play to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead after two.

Neither team was able to add to its goal tally in the third period as Marshall held off any comeback efforts by the Ice Bears to earn the win.

Green Bay Area outshot Marshall 38-22 on the game. Emma Klenken earned the victory in net, stopping 37 shots.

Marshall will now face Chisago Lakes in the championship at 12:30 p.m. at Ridder Arena.
