SMSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Mustangs finish MIAA/NSIC challenge falling to MWSU

HAYS, Kan. – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s basketball team fell 82-70 to Missouri Western State on Saturday night in the Mustangs’ second game of the MIAA/NSIC Challenge held in the Gross Memorial Coliseum.

SMSU shot 33 percent from the field (21 of 63) as MWSU shot 48 percent (31 of 64) as Caleigh Rodning led the way going 100 percent from the free throw line (10 of 10) to record a team-high 22 points. Erin Baxter and Meleah Reinhart each added 16 and 10 points respectively.

SMSU was out-rebounded 31 to 47 as MWSU created 40 points in the paint to top the Mustangs. MWSU was led by Katrina Roenfeldt, who recorded a double-double, 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mustangs trailed by 23 points with 2:56 in the third quarter before they outscored MWSU 26 to 10 in the fourth quarter to come within 12 points in the final. MWSU created 14 second chance points against SMSU’s two.

The Mustangs return home on Friday to host the Ramada Classic. SMSU faces Wisconsin Parkside with a 6 p.m. tip-off on Friday in the R/A Facility.
