WEDNESDAY BASEBALL: Marshall A’s get tripped up by Bird Island 8-3

BIRD ISLAND – The Marshall A’s amateur baseball team fell to Bird Island 8-3 on Wednesday.

The Bullfrogs were able to jump out to an early lead in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs to take a quick 2-0 advantage after an inning of play. Bird Island then continued to find scoring in the next two innings, scoring a run each to push its lead to 4-0 after three.

After a pair of scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth, Marshall finally got on the board with a run in the top of the sixth to cut it to 4-1. But Bird Island responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame, pushing the lead back to four.

The Bullfrogs added a run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-1 lead, but Marshall wasn’t done yet. The A’s cut the deficit to as close as three with a pair of runs in the top half of the eighth, but Bird Island put the game away with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to take the 8-3 win.

Jon Ellis led the way for the A’s with a 1 for 3 day at the plate with two RBI while Jordon Kontz added a hit and an RBI. Ryan VanMoer, Jake Hess, Justin Mettling, Nick Macchio and Alex Thompson all collected a hit as well for Marshall.

Hess took the loss on the hill, going 7.1 innings while allowing eight runs on 12 hits and striking out eight. VanMoer finished the final 0.2 innings.

Marshall (4-11) hosts Pipestone today at 7:30 p.m. at Legion Field.
