SMSU FOOTBALL: SMSU’s Jon Dicke named AFCA Good Works Team® nominee

NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Southwest Minnesota State University senior defensive lineman Jon Dicke has been recognized as a nominee for the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, the American Football Coaches Association announced this week.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® has been one of the most esteemed honors in college football for more than 25 years. The student-athletes who are nominated for this award not only demonstrate a unique dedication to community service and desire to make a positive impact on the lives around them, but they also show tremendous perseverance as well as the ability to overcome personal struggles and come out victorious against all odds.

Dicke, a native of Rochester, carries a 4.0 cumulative GPA in exercise science. Following the 2017 season, Dicke was named a first team CoSIDA Academic All-America®, becoming just the 20th SMSU student-athlete named Academic All-American and just the seventh to garner first team honors.

Dicke has been involved with many projects not only at SMSU and the Marshall community, but also in his hometown. Some of the projects he has been involved with include Mustang Mail, which is a community engagement program with Marshall elementary schools, bagging and packaging meals for the United Way in Marshall, Relay for Life and SMSU Athletics Highway Clean-Up. He has also been active with the Rochester Children’s Museum, Rochester Humane Society and Special Olympics.

On the field during the 2017 season, Dicke started all 11 games for the Mustangs and finished seventh on the team with 44 tackles with 1.5 for loss and one sack. He also had two pass break-ups. He is a two-time Academic All-NSIC honoree and has played in 32 career games recording 69 tackles.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® is comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA and one honorary head coach. To be in consideration by Allstate and the AFCA for a nomination, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.

The final roster of 22 award recipients and honorary head coach will be unveiled in September.
