SMSU BASEBALL: SMSU’s Hendricks named NSIC Player of the Week

BURNSVILLE – Southwest Minnesota State University freshman third baseman Jake Hendricks was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Week Monday following a strong four-game series versus Bemidji State at Alumni Field in Marshall.

Hendricks, a native of Waconia, helped SMSU close the season winning three of four games from BSU, which included a walk-off home run by Hendricks in game three of the series.

Hendricks finished the four games batting .467 (7 for 15) with four home runs, six runs scored, eight RBIs and 19 total bases. He finished the weekend with a 1.267 slugging percentage.

In game one of the series on Friday, he hit a two-run homer and scored a pair of runs in a 15-4 victory. In game two on Friday, Hendricks finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs, including belting a game-tying solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to help SMSU rally from an 11-4 eighth-inning deficit. SMSU eventually won the game 12-11 with a walk-off victory in the ninth.

In game three of the series on Saturday, Hendricks drilled an 0-2 pitch for a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to give SMSU a 5-4 win. He finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

For the season, Hendricks finished third on the team with a .316 batting average in 36 games with 31 starts. He collected eight doubles, five home runs, one triple and 22 RBIs.

Hendricks, a 2017 graduate of Waconia High School, is also a member of the SMSU football. He sat out the 2017 season as a redshirt.

Southwest Minnesota State finished the 2018 season with a 17-23 overall record, which included a 12-18 record in NSIC play.
