SMSU SOFTBALL: Eckerd takes final game of three-game series from Mustangs, 9-0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Nikole Van Geenep fired a three-hit shutout as Eckerd College (Fla.) earned a 9-0 victory in six innings over Southwest Minnesota State in college softball on Monday night at Turley Complex.

The two teams split a doubleheader on Sunday as SMSU opened its nine-game trip to Florida.

SMSU (4-5) was only able to muster a double from Bailey Johnson and singles from Kali Tomlinson and Mackenzie Clouse in the setback.

Eckerd (8-11) broke up a 2-0 game with a five-run fifth inning and then closed out the game with two runs in the sixth inning. The Tritons finished the game with 16 hits including four for extra bases.

Shelby Crank (3-2), who shutout Eckerd on Sunday, took the loss in the circle for the Mustangs, surrendering two runs on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk in four innings. Athena Golling and Megan Cull each pitched 2/3 of an inning of relief.

Southwest Minnesota State continues play in the Tampa Bay area today with a doubleheader versus the University of Tampa (10-9) starting at 1 p.m. CST.
