SMSU TENNIS: Mustangs drop tight match to U-Mary, 5-4

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s tennis team battled but came up just short in dropping a 5-4 match to the University of Mary in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women’s tennis on Friday night at the Capital Racquet & Fitness Center.

SMSU, now 3-5 overall, 1-4 NSIC, will conclude the weekend taking on MSU Moorhead on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. U-Mary improves to 2-3 overall and in the NSIC.

SMSU picked up a point at No. 1 doubles as Gabby Tellijohn and Cora Delich earned an 8-6 victory. Hannah Starke and Paige Janka dropped a tight 8-6 match at No. 2 doubles, while Olivia Watzke and Gabby Potthoff lost by an 8-4 score at No. 3 doubles.

Delich picked up a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) win at No. 2 singles, while Watzke earned a 6-1, 6-2, victory at No. 4 singles. SMSU’s final point of the night came at No. 6 singles with Potthoff recording a 2-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-6) win.
