Reconnect

There is a time and place for everything.

While reading Diane Wilson’s book “The Seed Keeper,” I was struck about how her Indigenous story of the sacredness of seeds mirrored my early years on the farm.

I’m not going to review or attempt to summarize her story. However, I certainly recommend her book for your next read. Basically, it’s a story about how seeds bind generations together, and it prompted me to think of the oats and soybeans we planted back in the day.

Upon harvesting a crop of soybeans or oats, we stored some of each of them to be used the following year. The seeds were cleaned the next spring, and planted. Oh, the stories those seeds could tell us if we could but hear them!

Wilson’s book reconnected me with that portion of my past, and it reminded me that as important as it is to find a time and a place for everything, there is always a need to reconnect in someway. We should never forget.

So, as I meandered through the wine store’s aisles last week, I noticed a bottle of Terra d’Oro white wine. It’s made in California, and is a blend of 87% Chenin Blanc and 13% Viognier. Thinking back to my last bottle of it, I found it necessary to couple with this wine once again. It didn’t disappoint me.

Its aroma is fully floral; its taste is filled with tropical fruits and the finish is crisp and dry. I’m glad I found the time and the place to come together with this vino — try it, I think you’ll like it.

At a recent meeting during which I was asked to moderate, the questions were for a candidate running for the local city council. There were a series of questions covering a host of issues, and then we came to the final question. It was to decide which is your favorite musician, Prince or Bob Dylan?

How does one compare those two talents? They are both iconic, but in different ways. When I was rehearsing the questions and I came to the last one about choosing between those two musical artists, my immediate response was that I would choose both of them — isn’t that a nice way to please both sides? But, then I began to realize that it’s not about choosing a side but finding a way to come together.

The meeting reminded me to see differences as a way to recouple, and to enjoy the goodness of our past, present and future selves. Like the “seeds” that bind us together, music has the same power.

Now, I ask you some questions. What’s lacking in your circle today? Who could make you feel better about an issue? Where would you go to find your place of peace? When are you going to decide to reconnect with that person, place or thing?

Yes, that’s heavy stuff, and it’s probably time to have a refreshing Pinot Grigio.

Luccio Pinot Grigio is reasonably priced and has terrific qualities that will help you find your connections again. You can’t help but love the crisp citrus flavors that end with a long slow finish. It gives you time to enjoy the front taste and to relish the back taste of the liquid.

Like the seed keeper in Diane Wilson’s book, we all have “seeds” that we are to protect, plant and harvest. What are your “seeds”?

One of the “seeds” that was planted in me by a friend of mine is to have a long overdue taste of Robert Mondavi’s Bourbon Aged Cabernet Sauvignon. I’ll be happy to harvest that wine with a slow savory tasting. I’ve got the time and the place for just such an enjoyable moment.

Now, it’s time to relax with a bottle of Relax Riesling. Enjoy its sweet lusciousness and relax.

As always, eat and drink in moderation but laugh with reckless abandon!

Cheers!
