Science revealing fingerprints of first cause

To the editor: Gazing out at the massive macro and peering in on the minute micro we observe an obedience to order crafted into creation such that each has a place and a purpose. At our crowning place in creation humanity has been gifted with our rational minds that we may reason while applying the lens of science so to reveal to us the fingerprints of the first cause. Forming our relationship with the first cause we realize our purpose. Stepping out of our purpose we plunder our place and in disobedience to order we utilize science to rationalize and reshape the universe to our ...

Keeping freedoms of speech, religion free

To the editor: Memorial Day is for remembering those who gave their lives for our country, the country we sing of as “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Two of our most precious freedoms are those of speech and religion. We need to speak of them and exercise them to ensure they are preserved. Two recent writers expressed opposing views regarding the content of science classes in our public schools. Teaching “belief in an intelligent design” or teaching “evolution based on gathered facts? Those who believe the Bible is the Word of God can cite these ...

The HRC and social justice

To the editor: According to the city code section 3.03, the New Ulm Human Rights Commission (HRC) was established “to advise the City Council and staff on human relations and civil rights problems.” Over the course of the past several years, it has become increasingly obvious that HRC does not function as it was originally intended. The vast majority of its time and resources are not directed toward advising the City Council and staff, but toward “educating” the general public, and especially toward advising the New Ulm public schools. What is the message that the HRC is ...

Sen. Dahms spreads misinformation

To the editor: In his May 19 2023 e-newsletter, State Senator Gary Dahms outlined when he would be making visits to local areas. He also spread misinformation about education policy in Minnesota. Sen. Dahms says in his newsletter (page 2) that new education policies will be “Mandating critical race theory (CRT) in public schools.” That is a fabrication and not even close to the truth. The policy he refers to has students learning about a variety of cultures, which will help them be more well-rounded citizens, increase their ability to effectively communicate with others, and ...

Government programs never disappear

To the editor: Politicians in an attempt to enhance their resumes to ensure reelection and/or make a move “up the ladder”, dream up and create programs they claim will show how compassionate and caring they are about peoples wants and needs. These programs require government intervention, policies and regulations which create agencies run by unelected bureaucrats, paid for by taxpayers, that implement all manner of policies. Nearly all of the programs are claimed to be designed to help the less fortunate of our society. Like a charity, but instead of it being run by ...

Science is not religion

To the editor: Mr. Phil Drietz raises an interesting question in his letter dated May 17. Why isn’t intelligent design theory taught in schools instead of evolution? This question does have an answer, which I will get into later. First, let’s briefly examine what intelligent design theory is and the forms it can take. Some believe that an intelligent designer, who many consider God or Gods, created the entirety of the universe. Others believe the intelligent designers are extraterrestrials who visited our planet millennia ago. And others believe this intelligent designer is an ...
