To the editor:
"Why publish hate speech?" was a Public Forum letter published in reply to my concern that the rainbow flag remains in the Marshall Middle School, despite the lawsuit settlement that declared the flag, "not viewpoint neutral."
Isn't "hate speech" words that show disregard and disrespect for others? I did not write about my hatred for the LGBTQ community or those who support them. My concern is that our First Amendment rights, which provide equal respect for all beliefs, are not being honored in our Marshall schools If the flag for the "Fellowship of Christian Athletes", another group in our schools, the flag would show a cross outlined in its center. But there may be students whose families do not worship any God and neither flag would show support for them.
To have a mission statement to "support all learners" as our school district does, shouldn't these words be put into action, teaching that our country's flag has that very purpose so the rainbow flag is not needed?
