Another $20 million for RTR School District plus 9.94% levy increase

To the editor: RTR provided the district tax payers with a breakdown of what the $20 million will cover. The first thing that needs to be noted is the project will not be $20 million, but $20,675,032. Where is the additional $675,032 going to come from? General fund reserves? Less than 5 years ago they took $575,000 from reserves for the sports complex. That is over $1 million is less than 5 years if new project goes through. If they keep spending the way they do, will they end up asking the tax payers for an operating referendum, thus increasing our taxes even more. Is ...

What is source of scientific data?

To the editor: Mr. Phil Drietz, of Delhi, MN very often writes about scientific issues. He generally gives a vast amount of scientific data to lend credence to his conclusions. His conclusions are not based on the data presented but, rather, are statements of Mr. Drietz’s pre-formed concepts. His letter is a method he uses to support these, generally, unfounded and unscientific concepts. The question becomes: What is the source of Mr. Drietz’s data? Could this data be found in Mr. Drietz’s religious books? No. First, religious books are not written to deal with scientific ...

Trump shows off dancing moves

To the Editor: As the political season heats up in the weeks leading to the election, I was surprised to see the most recent town hall hosted by former President Trump turn into a final half hour of his demonstrating dance moves along side host Kristi Noem, noted dog lover and advocate for the ASPCA. More research by Mr. Bernstein is rumored to include cameo appearances by a young Trump as “dancing bear” on the Captain Kangaroo show. Dennis Phelps, Westbrook

Impressed with school spirit

To the editor: I am writing to praise the spirit of the RTR cheerleaders who lead the fan support for the RTR football team in their game against the MCC Rebels on Thursday, Oct. 10, at the MCC field. I was part of the EMS crew that was there for the game. I estimate that we were parked about 175 feet away from the RTR Fans, and the cheerleaders. I was very impressed by the enthusiasm that the cheerleaders had, and maintained throughout the game; and that they brought out of the RTR fans. As the game went on, the cheerleaders not only continued showing their support, but seemed to ...

Is an unbiased media too much to ask?

To the editor: On Oct. 8, the Marshall Independent published an article from the Associated Press, written by Josh Boak. However, the title was changed from the original headline, which read: “New analysis suggests national debt could increase under Harris, but it would surge under Trump.” Instead, the Independent opted for: “New analysis suggests national debt Could increase under Harris.” Along with this change, five paragraphs from the original article were omitted. The result? A misleading title and article. The facts presented in the original report are far more ...

Liars make lousy leaders

To the editor: The COVID pandemic tested Donald Trump’s leadership. He failed. He mocked masking and social distancing. He suggested ingesting bleach and inappropriate medicines as COVID treatments. Scientific American reported that during Trump’s term, “COVID-19 mortality in the U.S. was 40 percent higher than” the rest of the G7. Trump initially promoted the development of COVID vaccines. In February 2021, he boasted, “I handed the new administration what everyone is now calling a modern-day medical miracle.” At a rally that August, he advised, “I recommend taking the ...
