Cottonwood issues water restrictions

The Cottonwood City Council issued water restrictions after Lyon County was notified by the Department of Natural Resources of a statewide drought plan.

The city announcement on Friday said the drought plan directs populations of 1,000 or more to implement appropriate water use restrictions contained within their Water Supply Plan. According to the release, The goal of water reduction during droughts is to maintain water usage of 50% above January water use.

“For Cottonwood, that would mean 3 million gallons of water can be used in a month’s timeframe during the short-term water use reduction period,” the release stated. “Currently, well draws are seeing readings from 90,000 to 150,000 — which means on the high end we will not meet our goals. Therefore, the City is asking the community to keep water usage to 100,000 gallons or less in a day.”

The following restrictions are in place:

• Residents with odd number housing shall water lawns or wash cars, when necessary, only on odd numbered calendar days.

• Residents with even number housing shall water lawns or wash cars, when necessary, only on even numbered calendar days.

• On days of watering, there shall be no watering of lawns between the hours of 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

• Violations of these restrictions shall result in a $50 per day fine.
