Sounds of Summer

Follow the music in downtown Marshall

Photo by Deb Gau You can’t beat a good polka, waltz or two-step — and the Larry Olsen Band was playing them all at the Red Baron Arena on Thursday morning. More than 200 people came to have lunch, enjoy the music, and learn about local history at the One Voice For Seniors event, which kicks off Marshall’s Sounds of Summer. Several couples took to the dance floor as the band played. At left, Marvin Zollner and Pam Zollner went for a twirl.

MARSHALL — Music will fill Marshall streets Saturday and some of it may be considered Guilty Pleasure.

The 10th annual Sounds of Summer is already underway with the polka music provided by the legendary Larry Olsen Band filling the inside of the Red Baron Arena Thursday afternoon.

The music really heats up on Saturday starting with a parade that will shake Main Street starting at 4 p.m. According to Sounds of Summer co-chair Russ Labat, the parade will feature more than 100 entries that will include a drum line and the Marshall High School marching band.

Two hours later, the Dueling Pianos out of Minneapolis kicks off the entertainment at the downtown Schwan’s parking lot off of West College Drive near the Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce building and behind Bello Cucina Italian Restaurant.

“We noticed kind of a lull of music (before the main band), so we added additional entertainment,” Labat said. According to its website, Dueling Pianos performers are “request-driven mega-interaction” and “audience interaction on steroids.”

The top act of the night, however, is a band called Guilty Pleasures Orchestra out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Chris Buren, who handles publicity for Guilty Pleasures, said the group of five performers play ’70s and ’80s music. But he says they are not a bar band.

“It’s not your normal ’70s and ’80s band,” Buren said. “It’s the type of songs you sing in the shower in the morning.”

One of the band members spent his early life in Marshall. Bassist/Vocalist Craig “Gumby” Olson was born and raised in Minnesota.

The other band members are:

• Guitarist/vocalist Brian “Beno” Detmers is a South Dakota native who’s been playing live and doing studio work since he was 17 years old. With a resume that includes Aaron Baron, Pressure Point, Flat Cat, I-90 West, The Freeloaders, The Neo Johnsons, Stranded With Norman, Life B4 Color, Hotel Oblivion, and The Cartwright Brothers Split Pea Band.

• Drummer Dick Bartling, a native of Brookings, South Dakota, toured full-time in the early to mid-’80s with three of the region’s most successful rock bands: Aaron Baron, Pressure Point, and Ivory. In recent years, he has performed with jazz greats Mike Miller, Matt Wallace, Ryan Kisor, and Justin Kisor.

• Keyboardist/vocalist Evan Jones began playing piano at age 5 and was heavily influenced by the pop music he heard on AM radio throughout his youth. Shadowfax was his first band in his early teens. While in high school at Sioux Falls Washington, he was a founding member of Wakefield. The band went on to become one of the most popular regional rock acts of the 1980s.

• Guitarist/vocalist Mike Dresch, a Sioux Falls, South Dakota, native, saw Paul McCartney and Wings play “Band on the Run” on TV at age 6 and it left a lasting impression. His band history includes Simon Sez, Closet Monster, and Swim and he’s shared the stage with Alice Cooper and Great White.

There are some non-music events that will entertain as well. A sand volleyball tournament hosted by the YMCA will be held at the Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball courts on Birch Street starting at 7 a.m.

Labat also said the National Guard will have a M777 Howitzer on display on the gravel parking lot next the Varsity Pub with a full crew of soldiers. The National Guard will also offer a rock climbing wall, arm wrestling table and punching bag machine.

And the third annual craft and vendor fair will feature more than 20 vendors, according to Labat.
