VFW contest open to students

The local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 742 of Marshall and its auxiliary are sponsoring the VFW National Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen essay contests. The VOD contest is open to all students enrolled in public, private, parochial schools or home schooled in grades 9-12. Students need to type and record a 3- to 5-minute audio/essay on a CD or flash drive. Be sure to label your CD or flash drive, neatly-typed essay and a photo with your name and complete the entry form. SMSU ‘Mustangs Unite’ Homecoming is Oct. 7-13

Mustang alumni will converge on Marshall for Homecoming 2019 at Southwest Minnesota State University, which will be Oct. 7-13 with a theme of “Mustangs Unite.” Many student-centered events take place during the week, including the Chartwells Stampede Feed on Oct. 7; Candidates’ Night, featuring hypnotist Freddie Justice, on Oct. 8; Mustangs Got Talent on Oct. 9; and Coronation and Take 2 Improv on Oct. 10. 30th anniversary University Gala Oct. 11 The 30th annual University Gala will be from 6 p.m.-midnight Friday, Oct. 11, in the R/A Facility at Southwest Minnesota State University. This year’s decorating theme is Emerald, to mark the emerald anniversary of the event. The University Gala has been a major fundraiser since its inception in 1989. Screening of Luis Argueta documentary ‘The U Turn: A Transformational Journey’ Oct. 2 Southwest Minnesota State University will host a screening of the Luis Argueta documentary film “The U Turn: A Transformational Journey” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in the Conference Center, lower level. Family weekend Sept. 20-22 Family weekend will take place this weekend at Southwest Minnesota State University. SMSU sets aside a weekend every year for students to invite parents, siblings, grandparents and family members to campus to take part in a fun-filled weekend of events and activities.
