SMSU Briefs for March 13

SMSU Fine Arts Celebration runs April 2-May 3

The 13th annual Fine Arts Celebration is April 2 through May 3 at Southwest Minnesota State University.

Vocal and instrumental concerts, theater productions, readings, art displays, costume making and more are on the schedule.

“This is a way to highlight the fine work of our talented students and faculty,” said event coordinator Dr. John Ginocchio. “The majority of the events are free to the public, and we invite people to check the schedule and come to campus for some of the events. This really showcases the talented groups and individuals — faculty, staff and students — at SMSU.”

Forensics students kick things off April 2 with the annual Forensics showcase at noon in BA 171.

The play, “Sense and Sensibility,” will be performed April 4-7, and again 12-14. The April 7 and 14 performances are at 2 p.m.; all others are at 7:30 p.m.

The week of April 8 is National Library Week and the SMSU McFarland Library will be collaborating with the Marshall-Lyon County Library for special events on April 8 and 9.

Students will make costumes during the annual Fashion Runway event April 9 in the theater lobby at 6:30 p.m.

A “Leaves of Grass” presentation featuring Forensics, theater and creative writing will be April 10 at 7 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre. Also that day will be student recitals in the Whipple Gallery at 1:30 p.m.

Vocal music concerts include “Ecstasy and Exultation” by the Men’s Glee Club & Bella Voce, April 11, 7:30 p.m., First Lutheran Church; and SMSU Chorale Masterworks Concert, “Ein Deutsches Requiem” (London version) by Johannes Brahms, 7:30 p.m., First Lutheran Church.

Band concerts include SMSU Jazz Ensemble, April 22, 7:30 p.m., Fine Arts Theatre; and the SMSU/Community Concert Band and the Symphonic Chamber Winds, April 28, “Spirits,” 4 p.m., Fine Arts Theatre.

The Southwest Minnesota Orchestra will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. on April 13 at the Schwan Community Center for the Performing Arts at Marshall High School.

Cassie Williams and Marianne Zarzana will give a reading, “Re-imagining Disability Through Literature,” on April 15 at 3 p.m. in the Whipple Gallery.

Student Academy Awards will be April 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre.

“Mustang Ovations,” which celebrates excellence within the Mustang family, will be at 4 p.m. on April 23 in the Conference Center Ballroom.

“Travels in England: Studying Abroad and Why It Could Be for You,” will be presented by Sariah Cheadle April 25 at noon in the Whipple Gallery.

The SMSU Drama Club will present “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” on April 25-28 in the Black Box Theatre. The April 25-27 performances are at 7:30 p.m., and the April 28 performance is at noon.

A number of student recitals are scheduled, including April 10, 1:30 p.m., Whipple Gallery; April 17, 1:30 p.m., Fine Arts Theatre; April 24, 1:30 p.m., Fine Arts Theatre; and May 1, 1:30 p.m., Fine Arts Theatre.

Ongoing events include SMSU faculty art show, April 1-12, Whipple Gallery; The Music of the Festival of Moors & Christians, Bellows, lobby display case, April 1-May 3; Here Comes the Bride, theater lobby display, April 17-May 11; and senior art & graphic design graduation exhibition, Whipple Gallery, April 18-May 3.

SMSU Jazz Ensemble concerts with Guest Artist Denis DiBlasio

Guest artist Denis DiBlasio will be the guest artist for the SMSU Jazz Ensemble at its pair of concerts on Monday and Tuesday, March 25 and 26.

The March 25 concert will be at 8 p.m. at Minneota High School and will also feature the Minnesota High School Jazz Band.

The March 26 concert will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Marshall Middle School Auditorium and will also feature the Marshall High School Jazz Band.

Clinics will be held at both sites during the day, at 12:30 p.m. in Minneota and 3:30 p.m. at Marshall.

The clinics and concerts ae free to the public.

DiBlasio, a baritone sax and flute player, was a longtime member of the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra. He is a well-known composer of jazz music and a respected clinician around the country.

This activity is funded, in part, by a grant from the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council through an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the state’s general fund.
