Trust withdrawn

Dear Annie: My husband and I have been married for 11 years, and we’ve always kept separate finances. It worked well until about a year ago, when he got laid off and started dipping into our joint emergency savings without telling me. I only found out when I went to pay our property taxes and the account was almost empty. When I confronted him, he said he didn’t want to worry me and that he planned to “put it all back.” He’s since picked up freelance work but hasn’t replaced what he used. The problem is, I don’t trust him anymore. I’m still working full-time, paying ...

Sisters, secrets and starting over

Dear Annie: A few months ago, my younger sister, “Kate,” announced during dinner that she and her boyfriend were moving to Nashville to “start fresh.” Everyone wished her well, but I was blindsided. What she didn’t share was that she’d already told me she was leaving our family business -- the bakery our parents started 30 years ago and that she and I have been running together since Mom retired. I manage the finances and supply orders, and Kate runs the front and does most of the decorating. We’ve had our share of arguments, but we always figured it out. When she told me ...

When washing greens

Dear Heloise: I saw a letter from Kelly T. in your column about washing greens. You mentioned submerging them in a bowl of cold water. Adding 1/2 cup of vinegar to 1 cup of water and soaking them for 3 minutes helps to remove bacteria. Just rinse and pat dry. -- Deborah Graham, in Curwensville, Pennsylvania READER COMMENTS Dear Heloise: A lot of newspapers have discontinued their print publications and are online only, so comics aren’t an option for gift wrapping in our area. Good old-fashioned clip binders are great for opened bags of chips/pretzels, etc. Also, plastic covers ...

Keeping the peace at Thanksgiving

Dear Annie: Every year, Thanksgiving turns into a tug-of-war in my family. My siblings and I all live within driving distance of our parents, but the holiday always comes with arguments about who’s hosting, who’s cooking and which in-laws get priority. This year feels worse than ever. My sister insists that everyone come to her house, but my brother refuses because of something she said last year. My parents just want peace but are too afraid to pick sides. I want us all together, but I also dread another holiday full of tension, whispered complaints and people leaving early in a ...
