Try this easy way to open cans

Dear Heloise: Recently, I watched a flight attendant open up cans using a credit card under the tab. After I returned home, I had a black bean can to open and tried using the credit card to pull the tab up. No broken fingernail or sore fingers! I would guess that people who have arthritis would find this to be an easy way to open cans. -- D.B., via email A HAIRDRESSER’S PLEA Dear Heloise: I’ve been a hairdresser for over 18 years, and there are a few things that I’d like to remind women of when they make an appointment at a beauty salon. First, this is not a hobby; it’s a ...

When organizing the closet

Dear Heloise: I use small paper tags that are hung by a string on each of my clothing hangers. These can be purchased from an office supply store. On one side, I write a short description of the clothing item, such as “long-sleeve black sweater with a V-neck.” On the other side, I write the name of the store and the month/year of purchase. I started doing this because some items needed specific hangers. However, I have found this practical to know how long I have owned an item or where I have purchased it. I know this seems over-the-top, but it has been useful for me and could also ...

When giving becomes too much

Dear Annie: I am struggling with what feels like a small thing, but it weighs on me. I have several great-nieces and great-nephews, and over the years I’ve tried to remember birthdays with cards, little gifts or even just a phone call. Lately, though, I feel overwhelmed. Between the number of children, the cost of presents and my own busy life, I can’t keep up the way I used to. This year, two of them have birthdays coming up, and I find myself dreading it rather than looking forward to celebrating them. Part of me wonders if I should stop sending gifts altogether and just ...

Reader comments on digging holes

Dear Heloise: Calling 811 before you dig a hole for a bush is a waste of the investigator’s time and a needless expense. Now if you’re planting a tree with a substantial-sized root ball (with perhaps a contractor who uses a large hydraulic spade), make the call by all means. Generally, service lines are required to be buried 24-30 inches below the ground’s surface. -- Bob Osterholt, via email PHONE EMERGENCY Dear Heloise: If anyone has to inform a person on my contact list about an emergency that I potentially have, this hint makes it easier for them to contact the right ...
