One-sided connections

Dear Annie: My sister “Michelle” and I used to be close, but things changed after she had her second child. She rarely returns my calls and only texts if I reach out first. When we do talk, it’s always short, and she seems distracted or annoyed. I’ve offered to help with the kids or bring meals by, but she always says she’s “got it handled.” Last month was my birthday. Michelle didn’t call or text, even though I saw her post online that day. I waited a few days before checking in. A few days later she reached out and apologized, saying she “meant to get around to ...

Host a tea party with all the kids

Dear Heloise: After reading the suggestion about gifting a child’s tea set to a grandmother with a new granddaughter, I just had to say that any grandchild would love tea parties! I started tea parties with my granddaughter, but the boys felt very excluded (which they were at first). Stopping the use of COPD inhaler causes sudden drop in AFib

Dear Dr. Roach: I have hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) and atrial fibrillation. My AFib burden seems to vary with my iron levels. My AFib went from 58% to less than 2% in two weeks after I had a phlebotomy recently. I can’t find anyone else who has had this experience. Am I the only one? My last ferritin test from a few weeks ago was 96 ng/mL. About the same time, I stopped using my combined COPD inhaler because of side effects. -- P.M. Answer: HH is a disease of iron absorption where the body cannot regulate how much iron it takes in. Normally, the body stops absorbing iron if it ...
