Walking on eggshells

Dear Annie: I am 60 years old and the mother of five grown children. I raised them mostly on my own after my divorce, and those years were not easy. There were slammed doors, late nights waiting up and more than a few tearful arguments. My daughters, especially during their teenage years, could be painfully cruel with their words. But somehow, we all made it through. These days, I am close to one of my daughters in particular. She calls often, leans on me for advice and turns to me whenever life throws her a curveball. I am always there with a listening ear, a home-cooked meal or a ...

Stockpiling food for the winter

Dear Heloise: It comes as no surprise that groceries are getting a lot more expensive. Where I live, we are often snowed in for a few days during the winter, or the roads get so bad that it’s nearly impossible to get to a grocery store. So, starting in September, I begin to stockpile food that will not perish for a long time such as canned chili, canned soups, pasta and various sauces, or materials to make a sauce. Hosting without reciprocity

Dear Annie: I have a dear friend of 49 years. She has been married for more than 50, while I only married seven years ago. She stood beside me as my matron of honor, and over the years, we have shared so many memories, laughs and life milestones together. Since my marriage, my husband and I have hosted this couple for dinner more times than I can count. We’ve cooked, entertained and tried to make our home a warm gathering place for all of us. In all that time, they have invited us over exactly once -- and that was to play cards, with no meal involved. Eventually I stopped inviting ...
