Reading the newspaper on a tablet

Dear Heloise: To the people who prefer reading a physical newspaper, stating that it’s just not the same on their laptop, and to those who worry about spilling coffee on the keyboard, I, too, would never read the paper on a laptop. But I now read it on a tablet. My paper offers a PDF of the printed version to its digital subscribers. It is an exact copy of the printed version, but once I download it to my tablet and put in my “books” folder, I can swipe to the next page or several pages ahead. I can increase the size of the type or comics up to whatever size I want and take it ...

Using up old Christmas lights

Dear Heloise: To get more use out of discarded Christmas lights, I place a strand in a decorative container and leave them on at night as a night light. This is helpful when walking into a dark living room or kitchen during the night. -- Edna G., in Houston GREASE STRAINER Dear Heloise: Having a grease can in the freezer is a great idea for containing grease; however, my method is quicker (and I have no room to spare in the freezer). I bought a grease strainer. It consists of a strainer basket with a handle, a grease catcher, and a lid. But I never use the lid. I can just dump all ...

Picking up the pieces after being left behind

Dear Annie: I’m wrapping up a HORRIBLE, out-of-the-blue abandonment divorce from my soon-to-be ex-husband. In 2023, I came home from teaching kindergarten to find out my ex took the majority of our furniture and moved out of state. He blocked me and erased me as if I didn’t exist. It took several months to locate him with a private detective. I’ve had to borrow money from my family in order to get him to pay me alimony. He makes three times more than I do and fought me on this. I wish he cheated on me because being abandoned is worse. My children both graduated from college ...

Purchasing single bedsheets

Dear Heloise: Please tell the reader who was asking that you can purchase single bedsheets on Amazon. You can buy them fitted and/or flat, as well as by the bed size. I recently did this myself, and I was happy with the product. I’m a fan of your hints! -- Rachelle R., via email SHOPPING SOUND-OFF Dear Heloise: It was the week before Christmas, and I was shopping at a large, well-known retail store where they only had one register open and a line that was the length of the entire store. Then retailers cry because they are losing business to online shopping. Well, Mr. CEO who ...
