Blackjacks top Lakers to advance to 4A final

DAWSON — Kameron Sather ran for 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns on Saturday to lead the No. 2 Dawson-Boyd football team to a 49-14 win over No. 3 Lakeview in the Section 4A semifinals. The win gives Dawson-Boyd its first section championship game appearance since its run to the state championship game in 2014.

Sather scored the first points of the game with a five-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The Blackjacks went on to go up 21-0 by the end of the first quarter, including a 60-yard punt return for Gunneer Liebl.

Liebl also completed a touchdown pass to Ryker Gruwell before halftime to give the Blackjacks a 35-6 lead at the half.

Lakeview’s lone first-half touchdown came on a 15-yard completion from Logan Herrick to Garrett Schafer.

Clayton Kosel led the Lakeview offense with 28 rushing attempts for 201 yards and a 15-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Sather and Nathan Hansen each ran for third-quarter touchdowns of 54 and 49 yards, respectively.

Dawson-Boyd takes on undefeated Minneota in the section championship at Mattke Field on Saturday at 10 p.m. Minneota is looking for its sixth consecutive section championship and fourth consecutive state championship, while Dawson-Boyd is searching for its first state tournament berth since it fell to Minneota in the 2014 state championship game.

Wabasso 32, Cedar Mountain 29

WABASSO — Nolan Leopold came up with a 56-yard kick return touchdown in the fourth quarter of No. 2 Wabasso’s Section 2 9-player semifinal against Cedar Mountain on Saturday, putting the Rabbits on top for a 32-29 win over No. 3 Cedar Mountain.

Wabasso trailed 21-12 at the end of the third quarter when Joe Rohlik ran for touchdowns of 4 and 9 yards to put the Rabbits on top. Yet, Jackson Guetter punched in a one-yard touchdown for Cedar Mountain to regain the lead before Leopold’s game-winning kick return.

Drew Kemp completed four of his nine pass attempts for 65 yards, two interceptions and a 26-yard touchdown to Jack Burns in the second quarter to go into halftime trailing 7-6.

Rohlik led the team’s rushing attack with 35 carries for 243 yards and three touchdowns. Burns finished with 58 receiving yards.

Zeke Olsen had 1.5 sacks and tied Rohlik with eight total tackles in the win.

Wabasso takes on Red Rock Central in the section championship at Lakeview High School on Saturday at 7 p.m.

MCC 45, RTR 7

SLAYTON –The second-seeded Murray County Central football team defeated No. 3 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 45-7 on Saturday to advance to the Section 3A section championship against Springfield for the second consecutive season.

The Tigers defeated the Rebels 20-10 in last year’s section final.

Friday’s section final at Mattke Field is scheduled to kick off at 12:30 p.m.
