Mustangs earn second straight sweep vs. MSU-Moorhead

MOORHEAD — Leah Jones and Ashley Peltier each reached double-digit kills while Natalie Pilney logged six ace blocks on Saturday as the Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team earned a 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 sweep of Minnesota State University–Moorhead in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.

The win was the second in a row for the Mustangs, who also swept Minnesota Crookston 25-25, 25-14, 25-18 after suffering a 13-25, 25-15, 25-20, 26-24 home loss to Sioux Falls on Tuesday.

Jones led the Mustang attack with 14 kills on Saturday while Peltier and Karli Arkell followed with 10 and eight, respectively.

Thein finished the match with a team-leading 34 set assists and 13 digs. McKenzie Tolk and Kennedy Drake also chipped in nine and eight digs.

In addition to Pilney’s six solo blocks, Steinmetz finished the night with a pair of block assists while Arkell and Jones each added one.

SMSU improves to 15-6 overall and 8-6 in the NSIC with the win, though they still fell to No. 18 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. The Mustangs will look to continue trending up when they host No. 21 Minnesota Duluth on Friday at 6 p.m. and Bemidji State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
