Marshall dominates football opener vs. Westonka

WESTONKA — The Marshall football team started the season with a statement win over Westonka on Thursday. Going on the road for the non-conference battle, the Tigers put together 27 second-quarter points to claim a 47-0 victory.

Andrew Stelter led the Tigers’ rushing attack on the day with 15 carries for 64 yards, also punching in three touchdowns. Ethan Weedman also had a pair of carries for 78 yards and two touchdowns while Milo Swenson carried the ball three times for 30 yards.

Jayden Meister was on the receiving end of Levi Maeyaert’s one passing touchdown in the game, hauling in a total of three receptions for 37 yards. Ethan Boeck also caught a pair of passes for 56 yards.

Marshall improves to 1-0 on the season and remains on the road next week for a Friday matchup against Rocori (1-0) at 7 p.m.

TMB 16, MACCRAY 8

TRACY — Defense shineD for the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton football team on Thursday when it opened its season against MACCRAY. Aiden Sanow had a pair of interceptions. Emery Xiong snagged another and the Panthers finished with a total of four sacks as they defeated MACCRAY 16-8.

In addition to his pair of interceptions on defense, Sanow also threw the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter. With the game tied at 8 points apiece, Sanow dropped back and threw a six-yard touchdown to Zick to give TMB the lead and David Schuh ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Panthers an 8-point cushion with under four minutes remaining.

Schuh also ran in the tying touchdown for TMB in the second quarter, taking a 1-yard run across the pylon for the touchdown while also again scoring the 2-point conversion.

Schuh finished the day with 147 yards on 25 attempts on the ground, as well as a 13-yard reception. Sanow also carried the ball seven times for 27 yards and completed five of his 12 pass attempts for 57 yards.

MACCRAY scored the game’s first touchdown in the waning minutes of the first quarter, with Blake Grimsley running the ball in from the 7-yard line for a touchdown and completing a 2-point conversion to Grant Meyer. Yet, the TMB defense locked in from there to secure the win.

Now 1-0 on the season, TMB returns to action on Friday, Sept. 5 when it goes on the road to take on United South Central at 7 p.m.

GRANITE FALLS –The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton football team dominated its first game under head coach Ted Kern on Thursday, pulling away early for a 39-0 road win over Yellow Medicine East.

Colten Thomsen led the team’s rushing attack with three rushing touchdowns while Gavin Schreurs had a big day under center with a rushing touchdown and a pair of passing touchdowns to Brayden Chandler and Lane Wichmann.

RTR improves to 1-0 and goes on the road to face Sleepy Eye United on Friday at 7 p.m.
