Schmidt’s dominant post performance leads Lakers past RCW

RENVILLE — Anah Schmidt was unstoppable down low for the Lakeview girls basketball team on Tuesday night, posting a dominant double-double in a 79-40 Laker victory.
Schmidt scored 18 points on 7 of 20 shooting from the field and 4 of 5 shooting from the free-throw line. In the post, she grabbed 16 total rebounds and six offensive rebounds.
Brook Gunlogson also made an impact on the offensive boards, with five of her six rebounds coming on the offensive end, while Brynn Stensrud added another seven rebounds.
Stensrud was also the Lakers’ leading scorer with 19 points on 6 of 13 shooting from the field. She was also one of three Lakers to knock down a pair of 3-pointers, along with Gunlogson (14 points) and Aleiah Rosenau (6 points).
Defensively, Stensrud accounted for five of the team’s 12 steals while Aubrey Nething, Aubreigh Rausch and Jovie Benson each added another two. Carmen Varpness also had the lone Laker block while scoring 13 points.
Gunlogson, Nething and Savanna Louwagie each dished out three assists, with Louwagie not recording a turnover in the process.
Lakeview (2-0) will return to Cottonwood on Thursday to host Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (1-1) for its home opener at 7:30 p.m.
Adrian-Ellsworth 63, RRC 34
LAMBERTON — The Red Rock Central girls basketball team couldn’t keep pace with Adrian-Ellsworth in the second half of its 63-34 loss on Tuesday night.
Maia Scheffler contributed six assists and five steals in the loss. In terms of scoring, Kendra Schroeder led the team with 11 points while Tia Donkersloot added another 10.
Red Rock Central (0-4) will play its first road game of the season on Friday when it heads to Tyler to do battle against the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Knights (2-0) at 7:30 p.m.
RTR 62, MCC 55
SLAYTON — Laken Baartman racked up five steals for the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team in its Tuesday night game against Murray County Central. The Knights rode that momentum to a narrow 20-23 advantage in the turnover battle and held on for a 62-55 win.
In addition to Baartman, Avery Schreurs recorded three steals in the win for RTR while Brezlyn Buchert added another two. Ava Karbo and Adalia Matzner also contributed on the defensive end with two blocks for Karbo and one for Matzner.
Makayla Hesse led the RTR scorers in the game with 13 points on 5 of 8 shooting from the field and 3 of 6 from long range. Schreurs also contributed 10 points on eight attempts while Karbo added another 8 points on five shots.
For the Rebels, Ava Deacon led the way with 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting and draining her lone 3-point attempt. She also tied Thea Schneider with a team-high four steals while Schneider also blocked a pair of shots.
Miller spaced the floor for MCC, knocking down three of her six attempts from 3-point range for 11 points.
MCC built a narrow 33-32 advantage on the boards and a 10-9 advantage on the offensive glass. Schneider and Taylor Larson each grabbed seven rebounds for MCC, including three offensive boards for Larson, while Karbo grabbed five offensive rebounds and seven total rebounds for RTR.
Prior to Tuesday’s win, RTR hadn’t won three consecutive games since Jan. 19 through 24 of the 2022-23 season, in which they defeated Ortonville, Renville County West and Lakeview. The Knights, now 3-0, will look to make it four consecutive wins when it returns to Tyler to host Red Rock Central (0-4) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Murray County Central (1-3) will head back out on the road for its fourth road matchup in its first five games, taking on Southwest Minnesota Christian (1-0) in Edgerton on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
YME 57, Canby 42
GRANITE FALLS — With three players scoring in double digits, the Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team downed Canby 57-42 Tuesday evening. Alana Almich led the way with a team-high 17 points and 18 rebounds for the Sting.
Klaira Shackelford and Bailey Mortenson each had 13 points, while Shackelford also shot 2-for-3 from the 3-point line and Mortenson grabbed 14 rebounds.
Bayli Sneller also had a pair of steals on the night.
For Canby, Brynn Kockelman had 20 points on the night with seven rebounds and four steals. She shot 4-for-9 from the 3-point line and 6-for-18 overall from the field.
Addison Driessen followed with 6 points.
Canby (0-3) will get back on its home court on Thursday when it hosts Renville County West (1-1) at 7:15 p.m.
Yellow Medicine East (2-1) will travel to the Viking Gym for a road matchup against the Minneota Vikings (1-0) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

HILLS — Riley Parker and Leah Carter combined for 34 points on Tuesday night to will the Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team to a 46-40 road win over Hills-Beaver Creek.
Parker knocked down a pair of first-half 3-pointers to score 11 of her 17 points before halftime, while Carter heated up after the break with 9 of her 17 points coming in the second half. Hadley Jenniges also scored 7 points in the win.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove (3-1) will next take on Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (0-2) in Westbrook on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
