St. Cloud Boys Invite

ST. CLOUD — Senior Jayden Manthei put together a top-10 performance in the field of 125 golfers at the St. Cloud Country Club Boys Invitational on Thursday afternoon. His team-best performance helped the Marshall Tigers place third out of 21 teams at the tournament.

Manthei carded a score of 76 on the day to stand alone in ninth place. He birdied his first hole of the day, the par-5 tenth hole, and added an additional 3 birdies on the front 9 to finish his round at 4-over.

Every stroke counted for the Tigers’ team score. Marshall finished with a score of 317, just two strokes back of runner-up Eagan and one stroke ahead of fourth-place St. Cloud Cathedral. Fifth-place Pequot Lakes, sixth-place Sartell and seventh-place Bemidji and New London-Spicer were also each within five strokes of Marshall.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s won the tournament with a team score of 306. In the individual leaderboard, Mounds View’s Cooper Larson took first with a score of 1-under 71, BSM’s Braydon Pulcanio finished even par at 72 and Heritage Christian Academy’s Evan Villagomez and St. Cloud Cathedral’s Nathan Schuver tied for third at 1-over 73.

Manthei wasn’t the only senior leading the charge for the Marshall Tigers. Drew Parsons was the Tigers’ No. 2 golfer on the day and Brayden Louwagie was Marshall’s No. 3.

Parsons tied Sartell’s Carson Andel and Pequot Lakes’ Ethan Thomas for 14th place with a 6-over 78. Parsons recorded a pair of birdies on the front nine and another pair on the back nine, including his final hole, hole 10.

Louwagie entered a nine-way tie for 30th in the tournament with a 9-over 81. He was particularly strong on the back 9, where he went just 3-over with a birdie.

Sophomore Keegan Fossum and junior Luke Ehlers tied for 39th as the Tigers’ final scorer at 10-over 82. Ehlers’ lone birdie on the day came on hole 15. He was fairly even on the day, going 5-over on the front and back 9, while Fossum went 3-over on the back 9 and 7-over on the front with no birdies on either.

After putting on a quality performance against one of the bigger fields they’ve faced so far this season, the Tigers will look to build on that momentum on Monday when they head to Dacotah Ridge Golf Club for the Big South Conference Championship, beginning at 9 a.m.
