Hjelmeland, Mork lead Dawson-Boyd to victory in Tyler

TYLER –Drew Hjelmeland and Evan Mork both put together top-3 performances at the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys Invitational on Friday at Tyler Golf Club. The Dawson-Boyd duo’s placement near the top of the leaderboard led the Blackjacks to a first-place finish at the event.

Hjelmeland finished as the event runner-up with a 1-over 72. He picked up his first of four birdies on the day on the first hole. He was particularly strong on the back 9, where he shot 1-under, and his score put him behind only Luverne’s Henry Hartquist, who finished with a 68. 

Right behind Hjelmeland, Mork tied Lac qui Parle Valley’s Carson Besonen for third place with a 77. Like Hjelmeland, Mork also birdied his first hole of the day, hole 10, and picked up another on hole 7.

Dawson-Boyd put together a team score of 317, 10 strokes fewer than runner-up Luverne. Marshall took third place with 328 strokes, followed by LQPV at 349, RTR at 368 and Minneota at 390.

Carson Stratmoen and Evan Menning rounded out the RTR scorers on the day. Stratmoen placed sixth in the event with an 81 while Menning shot an 87 to place 12th.

Marshall was led by the senior duo of Brayden Louwagie and Nate Panka on the day. Louwagie placed fifth on the day with a 79 while Panka shot an 81 to place sixth, tied with Stratmoen. Louwagie also picked up birdies on holes 7, 10 and 12 while Panka birdied holes 1 and 13.

Freshman Deacon Wing placed eighth for Marshall at 82 strokes while Keegan Fossum placed 10th at 86.

RTR was led by Jonah and Isaac Norgaard, who placed 17th and 18th with 89 and 90 strokes respectively, while Keaton Jurrens led Minneota with 92 strokes.

RTR and Minneota will next compete at the Section 3A Tournament at Great Life Golf & Fitness in Worthington, Dawson-Boyd at the 5A Tournament at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Willmar and Marshall at the Section 3AA tournament at Oakdale Golf Club in Buffalo Lake. The Section 3A and 5A tournaments will be held on Wednesday, May 22 and 29 while the Section 3AA tournament is scheduled for Thursday, May 23 and May 29.

RTR Girls Invitational

TYLER — Lindsey Lund and Alyssa Swedzinski took the top two spots at the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls invitational on Friday, leading the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks to beat out the next closest team by 39 strokes at the event.

The Blackjacks’ dominant duo is coming off a successful conference championship outing in which they claimed two of the top three spots to lead the Blackjacks to a Camden Conference title.

On Friday, Lund won the tournament with a 4-over 75 while Swedzinski was right behind her with an 11-over 82. Lund was 2-under after picking up birdies on holes 3 and 6 and added another on hole 11. Swedzinski also had a hole 13 birdie and eight pars on the day.

Dawson-Boyd put together a team score of 347 to run away with the win while RTR finished second at 386. Marshall claimed third at 406 strokes, Luverne took fourth at 442 and Minneota competed but did not field a team score.

Kylar Hjelmeland placed fifth for DB, shooting a 92, while Claire Stratmoen shot a 98 to round out the Blackjack scorers in seventh place.

Dayton Webskowski led Marshall with an 82, tying Swedzinski for second place. She finished with a par or better on holes 6 through 10, including a birdie to start the back 9.

Grace Rokeh took ninth place for Marshall with a 99 while Isabella Gossen and Ali Pederson placed 14th and 18th with a 110 and a 115.

Shae O’Leary put together the low round for RTR with an 89 to place fourth overall. Teigyn O’Leary and Jenna Gossen placed sixth and seventh for the Knights with a 94 and a 98 while Izzy Thomas was the team’s No. 4 scorer with a 105 to place 11th. 

RTR and Minneota will next compete at the Section 3A Tournament at Great Life Golf & Fitness in Worthington, Dawson-Boyd at the 5A Tournament at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Willmar and Marshall at the Section 3AA tournament at Oakdale Golf Club in Buffalo Lake. All three tournaments will be held on Wednesday, May 22 and 29.
