Manthei, Tigers finish as meet runners-up in Worthington

WORTHINGTON — Every stroke mattered in the Big South Conference’s second boys golf meet of the season at Great Life Golf & Fitness on Monday. Unfortunately for Marshall, the Tigers came up just one stroke shy of Luverne in the meet and settled for second place.

The runner-up finish marks the second consecutive conference meet that’s gone down to the wire between Luverne and Marshall after the two teams tied at 154 strokes at Redwood Valley last week. That time, however, Marshall’s depth gave it the tiebreaker needed to edge out the Cardinals.

This time around, Marshall finished with a team score of 151 while Luverne came in at 150. Redwood Valley took third place at 176 while Worthington, Pipestone and Windom claimed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

senior Jayden Manthei led Marshall on the day with a score of 1-over 36, tying Worthington’s Andrew Mulder for second place in the field of 35. Manthei came up with three birdies and three pars on the day, including a clutch birdie on his final hole — hole 1 — to move into a tie for second.

Luverne’s Owen Sudenga was the individual meet champion at 3-under 32, carding two birdies and no holes over par on the day.

Luverne also claimed fourth place with a 3-over 37 from Henry Hartquist. Still, Marshall’s depth was nearly enough to put the Tigers on top as they claimed each of the next three slots.

Junior Luke Ehlers and senior Nate Panka tied for fifth place for Marshall, each carding a 4-over 38. Ehlers birdied his second hole of the day, though a 3-over 7 on hole 7 hurt his score later. Panka also birdied two of his first three holes.

Drew Parsons rounded out the Marshall scorers with a 39 to place seventh. He didn’t birdie on the day but carded six pars.

Tyler Arends and Levi Gonnerman rounded out the Luverne scorers with Arends tying Redwood Valley’s Mason Frank for eighth at 40 strokes and Gonnerman placing 10th at 41.

While not contributing to the team score, freshman Deacon Wing had a solid day for Marshall, placing 11th overall at 42 strokes.

Marshall will next compete at the Boys Cardinal Invite at Rose Lake Golf Club in Fairmont on Saturday. Tee times are scheduled to start at 9 a.m.

Big South girls

PIPESTONE — A pair of top-5 performances from Rylee Jacobson and Dayton Webskowski weren’t enough to put the Marshall girls golf team on top at a Big South Conference meet in Luverne on Monday as the Tigers fell behind Redwood Valley as the meet runners-up.

The meet was originally scheduled to be played in Luverne but was relocated to Pipestone due to course conditions.

Marshall has finished as the meet runner-up in each of the first two conference events of the season after carding a 200 to Redwood Valley’s 190 in the conference opener in Marshall last week.

On Monday, Redwood Valley claimed each of the meet’s top two spots to put together a team score of 182 while Marshall placed second at 198. Worthington took third at 205, Luverne fourth at 208 and Pipestone and Windom did not field a team score.

Jacobson and Webskowski led Marshall in a tie for fourth place in the field of 29, each carding a 46 on the day.

Jacobson, who started on hole 7, had a stretch of three consecutive pars on holes 1, 2 and 3. Webskowski went more than one stroke over par on just two holes and picked up a par on hole 5.

Mila Jenniges finished in first for the second meet in a row, carding an even-par 36 on the day. She birdied her first and last holes and beat out the meet runner-up, teammate Taylor Klabunde, by six strokes.

Junior Ali Pederson was the Tigers’ No. 3 scorer on the day, placing 10th at 52 with a par on her second and final holes. Freshman Kathryn Gordon rounded out the Marshall scorers in 14th with 54 strokes.

Marshall will next compete at the Girls Cardinal Invite at Rose Lake Golf Club in Fairmont on Saturday. Tee times are scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
