Game 1
Marshall 15, Worthington 2
WORTHINGTON -- Despite being held to just one extra-base hit in the first game of its doubleheader against Worthington, the Marshall baseball team was active at the dish on Tuesday. Marshall was selective with its pitches at the plate and accumulated nine hits and 12 walks in a 15-2 win.
Andrew Cowden led the offense in game 1 with two hits and two walks. He also had the only double of the game while Plante and Braeden Myhre each had a pair of singles.
Deagan Maurice had one hit in the game but drove in a game-high three runs. Plante and Myhre each drove in another two.
Ashton Blomberg earned the win on the mound, holding Worthington to one earned run and one unearned over six innings. He struck out nine batters without a walk and allowed just four hits. He also had a single, two walks and was hit by a pitch at the plate.
In a one-inning relief outing, Myhre held Worthington without a hit, walk or run while striking out a batter.
Marshall lead 11-0 after the top of the sixth inning when Worthington finally got on board with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Still, Marshall continued to work at the plate and pushed across another four runs in the seventh inning.
Game 2
Marshall 12, Worthington 2
WORTHINGTON -- Andrew Cowden and Coby Brownlee led a red-hot Marshall offense into Worthington on Tuesday night. The Tigers scored a run in five of the baseball game's six innings to capture a 12-2 win over the Trojans.
Cowden and Brownlee each had three hits in four plate appearances on the day. Cowden had a pair of doubles and drove in a game-high five runs while Brownlee had a triple, three RBIs, a stolen base and drew a walk.
Andrew Stelter, Levi Maeyaert and Talen Plante each also had a pair of hits while Samuel Thor doubled in his lone at-bat.
Owen Kesteloot got the start and the win for Marshall. He held Worthington without an earned run while tossing all six innings, holding the Trojans to three hits and a walk. He also struck out six batters.
The Tigers scored three first-inning runs to set the tone for the game. After Worthington pushed in a pair of runs in the top of the third inning and shut Marshall down in the bottom of the frame to make the score 4-2, Marshall scored two runs in the fourth inning to recoup its four-run lead and pulled away with another three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
Marshall improves to 14-3 with the wins and will host Pipestone for its next game on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
MCC 4, Minneota 3
MINNEOTA -- A four-run fourth inning made all the difference for the Murray County Central baseball team on Tuesday as the Rebels stole a 4-3 road victory against Minneota.
Jesse Klein got on base in the top of the fifth inning with a one-out single and advanced to second when Gavin Gillette did the same. From there, Teague Meyer drove in one run with a double and Gillette scored on a passed ball to make the score 2-1.
The Vikings made a pitching change and it resulted in the second out of the inning, but Dylan Kluis came up with an RBI single, stole second and scored when Krew Schneider reached on an error for a 4-1 Rebel advantage.
Kluis pitched the first 6 2/3 frames for MCC, holding Minneota to three earned runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and a pair of walks. Veldhuisen pitched the final out for MCC.
For the Vikings. Brody Larson allowed three earned runs over 4 1/3 innings of work. He struck out six batters while allowing four hits and a pair of walks. Ryan Dalager held MCC to one unearned run on one hit with six strikeouts over the final 2 2/3 innings.
Minneota responded in the sixth inning when Peyton Sheik singled and Eli Gruenes each singled and scored on an error. Carson Javers and Brody Larson each also reached base with two outs in the seventh inning but the Vikings couldn't quite punch across the tying run.
Javers scored the game's first run in the first inning when he hit a leadoff single and went on to score on a Ryan Dalager sacrifice fly.
Javers, Larson, Sheik and Parker Bradley each reached base twice for the Vikings while Meyer and Kluis each did for MCC.
MCC improves to 11-2 with the win while Minneota falls to 7-5. The Rebels will go on the road to face Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. while Minneota will go on the road to face Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at the same time.
PREP SOFTBALL
M/C 18, MACCRAY 0
MINNEOTA -- It took just one inning for the Minneota/Canby softball team to pull away enough runs to secure victory when it hosted MACCRAY on Tuesday. The Vikings rattled off 12 runs in the first frame of action before pulling away for an 18-0 victory.
The Vikings got everyone involved offensively in the game. Faith Myhre had a triple while Izabelle Hulzebos, Madison Hennen, Dakota Pesch and Rachel Fairchild each doubled. Hulzebos' three hits and four RBIs were a game-high while Pesch added another three RBIs and tied Myhre with a game-high three walks.
Kenadi Arndt and Kiersyn Hulzebos each also had a pair of hits. Arndt stole two bases on the day while Myhre, Pesch and both Hulzeboses stole one.
Hennen pitched three perfect innings to start the game and struck out five batters. Joelle Otto completed the shutout, limiting MACCRAY to one single while striking out a batter in the fourth and final inning of the game.
Minneota/Canby improves to 13-6 with the win and will wrap up its regular season on the road against Lac qui Parle Valley on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
