Minneota returns to subsection finals with win over Lakers
3A Girls basketball subsection semifinal roundup March 1, 2024
MONTEVIDEO — The Minneota girls basketball looked every bit the part of a No. 1 seed in its Friday night 3A North subsection semifinals matchup against the No. 4N Lakeview Lakers. The Vikings jumped out to a 9-2 lead to start the game and never looked back in the 71-47 win.
Dakoda Hennen was on fire for Minneota from beyond the arc. The senior guard made a game-high four 3-pointers n just five attempts to finish with 21 points. As a team, Lakeview went just 1 of 13 from beyond the arc while Minneota shot 10 of 20.
Also making an impact from long range, Nevaeh Hennen shot 3 of 4 from 3-point range for 9 points while Faith Myhre went 2 of 3 for 10 points on the day. Kiersyn Hulzebos was the Vikings’ second-leading scorer with 14 points.
Shelby Justesen and Brynn Stensrud led Lakeview with 13 points each while Brook Gunlogson and Anah Schmidt each contributed another 6 points.
Efficiency was the killer for the Lakers in the game. Lakeview kept pace with Minneota on the boards, finishing with a 13-6 advantage in offensive rebounds while trailing just 34-37 in total rebounding margin. They also held a 13-15 advantage in the turnover battle. Still, with Minneota shooting 47% from the field, 50% from 3-point range and 70% from the free-throw line, Lakeview’s 31/8/46 shooting splits were too much to overcome.
Kenadi Arndt was the game’s leading rebounder with 16 total rebounds and three offensive boards. Lakeview had a more balanced effort on the glass with Gunlogson, Justesen, Stensrud and Aubreigh Rausch each grabbing a pair of offensive rebounds. Justesen’s eight total rebounds were a game-high while seven other Lakers had either three or four total rebounds.
Justesen led Lakeview’s efforts in the turnover battle with four steals while Arndt had five for Minneota. Arndt’s two blocks also tied Lakeview’s Megan Schwartz for a game-high.
Lakeview finishes its season 17-11, a 12-win improvement from last season. The future is bright for the Lakers, who are graduating just one senior in Justesen.
The ninth-ranked Minneota Vikings will keep dancing in search of their seventh consecutive state tournament appearance when they face the No. 2 seed, Central Minnesota Christian, in the subsection championship game on Tuesday at 8:05 p.m. in Montevideo. The winner will take on the winner of the South subsection — No. 1 Southwest Minnesota Christian or No. 3 Edgerton — in the section championship game at Southwest Minnesota State University on Friday at 5 p.m.
No. 3 Edgerton 52,
No. 2 WWG 51
WORTHINGTON — The No. 3 Edgerton girls basketball rallied late to pick up a 52-51 win over No. 2 Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Friday night in the Section 3A South subsection semifinals. The win marks the second year in a row that the Chargers entered the subsection semifinals as the No. 2 seed and fell to a third-seeded Edgerton team.
Alyda Vande Griend gave Edgerton the lead in the final two minutes after she finished a layup through contact to put the Dutchmen on top 47-45. She missed the and-1 free throw but Mateya Gilbertson grabbed the offensive rebound and fed Gilbertson the ball for a pair of second-chance points.
Edgerton maintained a 4-point lead for the rest of the game until Amelia Sikel knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Her shot made it a 1-point game but the clock expired as the ball swished through the net, allowing Edgerton to hang on.
WWG finishes its regular season at 23-5 and graduates five seniors in Izzy Klumper, Addeson Jenniges, Abby Wiggins, Amelia Sikel and Ella Knakmuhs.
Stats were unavailable for the game at time of press.
