ST. MICHAEL — While thunder delays disrupted the final day of the Class A state track and field meet, that didn’t stop a handful of area athletes from heading home with hardware. The Canby/Minneota girls medaled in the 4×200-meter relay and Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central’s Bowen Hesse added another medal in the 110-meter hurdles.
Canby/Minneota placed seventh in the 4×200. Jordyn Jostock, Karlie Wollum, Brynn Kockelman and Taylor Ourada represented the Lancers in the event, clocking in at 1:45.16. The same quartet is also slated to represent Canby/Minneota in the 4×100 final.
Hesse finished ninth in the 110 hurdles final, crossing the line at 15.59 to close out his prep career with some state hardware.
Lakeview’s Broden Stensrud won the wheelchair discus with a throw of 50-04. The win marks his second state title in as many days after he won the wheelchair shot put on Thursday.
Murray County Central’s Charley Holm placed 13th in the girls pole vault, Pesek placed 23rd in the girls 1600 and Lakeview’s Garrett Schafer placed 22nd in the boys long jump.
MCC’s boys 4×800-meter relay team of Brayden Gilb, Beckett Stelter, Henry Carlson and Alexander Betz fell just shy of a medal, placing 11th. Their time of 8:30.34 left them less than four seconds shy of the final medal position.
Events were still ongoing at the time of print. Full coverage of the Class A finals will be available online and in Tuesday’s edition of the Independent.
