Mauer Leysen pitched a complete-game no-hitter while the Marshall VFW Orange 15U team caught fire at the plate to cruise to a 12-0 win in five innings in the first day of the Luverne tournament Friday afternoon, against Luverne.

Leysen tossed all five frames and finished with eight strikeouts while allowing no hits, with just two walks.

Marshall was also quick to get into action and took a 9-0 lead after the first two innings. The Tigers finished with 10 hits and no errors, while the Cardinals committed two errors.

Max Weedman had a big game at the plate, going 2 for 2 with a pair of runs and a team-high three RBIs.

Kellen Drake got Marshall’s offense started in the top of the first, scoring the opening run by stealing home. He was initially walked to reach base.

Magnus Schlenner also did the same shortly after, stealing home to score, while Weedman followed behind and scored on a Luverne defensive error. Schlenner had a base hit while Weedman also walked.

Marshall continued to take advantage of Luverne miscues, as Nolan Deutz scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch for a prompt 4-0 Marshall lead.

The Tigers kept up the same pace in their next at-bat in the second inning, tacking on another five runs to extend to a 9-0 lead.

Drake scored on a Schlenner RBI single, while Kaden Boeck followed on a Weedman sacrifice fly. Schlenner then scored on a wild pitch, and both Mason Moua and Graem Bly scored on the same play as a result of a Cardinals’ error.

Marshall scored three more times in the top of the fifth to officially put the game in mercy-rule territory while continuing to hold off Luverne, and did so one more in the bottom of the fifth for the win.

Marshall Orange is off to a 3-0 start to the season, and will next play another game at the Luverene tournament today and Sunday. Both games are slated for 11 a.m.
