DeSmet’s 24 points push Vikings past Lancers

Section 3A boys basketball subsection quarterfinals March 2, 2024

MONTEVIDEO — Sawyer DeSmet recorded a game-high 24 points on Saturday morning to lead the No. 4 Minneota boys basketball team to a 70-64 win over No. 5 Canby in the Section 3A North subsection quarterfinals. The win pits the Vikings up against top-seeded Dawson-Boyd in the subsection semifinals on Thursday in a rematch of the Camden Conference Championship game.

DeSmet’s points came on 10 of 22 shooting from the field and 4 of 8 shooting from the free-throw line. He also tied Lincoln Jerzak with eight rebounds to lead the Vikings to a 35-29 advantage on the glass. His seven offensive rebounds led Minneota to a 17-5 offensive rebounding advantage.

Ryan Dalager also grabbed seven rebounds for Minneota while Kolton Duis and Zach Ourada led Canby with eight and seven rebounds respectively.

Duis led Canby with 13 points in the game while Dylan Houseman and Michael Tol added another 12 points each.

As a team, Canby finished shooting a 53.1% effective field goal percentage to Minneota’s 34.2% mark. Yet, turnovers shifted the tenor of the game. Minneota forced 26 Lancer turnovers while coughing it up just eight times themselves. Lucas Rybinski led the charge in the turnover battle with four steals while Dalager grabbed another three. Houseman accounted for all three of Canby’s steals.

Rybinski and Dalager added 12 and 11 points for the Vikings and also dished out three assists each. Jerzak, Rost and Peyton Sheik also tallied three assists on the night while Duis, Ourada and Bryant Hansen led Canby with four each.

Canby finishes its season at 15-11 while Minneota improves to 21-7 with the win. They’ll return to Montevideo on Thursday to take on Dawson-Boyd (26-2), currently ranked No. 2 in Class A. The Blackjacks have gone 2-0 against the Vikings this season and are looking to make their second consecutive appearance in the Section 3A championship game.

No. 5S MCC 84, No. 4S TMB 83

WORTHINGTON — Trevor Smith’s 41-point outing wasn’t enough to lift the No. 4 Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers past No. 5 Murray County Central’s balanced scoring attack on Monday night as the Rebels held on for an 84-83 victory in the Section 3A South boys basketball subsection quarterfinals on Saturday.

Smith shot 12 of 35 from the field for the Panthers with five 3-pointers in the loss while Alex Munson and Brian Erbes added another 13 and 11 points respectively. Munson also shot 3 of 9 from 3-point range.

Bryce Hoekman was the leader for MCC. The senior big man finished with 27 points on 11 of 14 shooting from the field. On the defensive end, he blocked a pair of shots and grabbed eight rebounds.

Aidan Dierks spaced the floor for MCC with 19 points on 3 of 8 long-range shooting while Gavin Gillette added another 10 points.

Gillette and Smith each dished out six assists on two turnovers for their respective teams. Both teams turned the ball over exactly 13 times.

Munosn grabbed 12 rebounds to single-handedly lead the Panthers to a 31-27 rebounding advantage. Erbes was second on the team with five rebounds while Dierks and Engelkes each grabbed seven for MCC.

TMB finishes its season at 17-10 while MCC improves to 15-12. The Rebels will take on the South’s top seed, Hills-Beaver Creek, in the subsection semifinals in Worthington on Thursday at 6 p.m. HBC defeated MCC 69-64 on Dec. 12and 57-48 on Jan. 27.
