Beavers shut out SMSU in doubleheader

MINOT, N.D. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team couldn’t get anything going at the dish on Friday against Minot State. The Beavers held the Mustangs scoreless through both games of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader and Minot State ran away with a 4-0 win and a 10-0 win in five innings.

In the first game of the day, Karlie Miller took to the circle for the Mustangs. The junior pitcher threw the full six innings for SMSU, limiting the potent Beaver offense to eight hits and two walks in the 4-0 loss. Miller struck out six batters on the day but still fell to 6-9 on the year with the loss.

The Mustangs reached base just four times in the first game of the day, all via singles. Freshman Brynn Webber was the only Mustang to reach base multiple times in the game, singling twice, while Riley Kramolisch and Molly Bull each singled once. None advanced any further than first base.

Taryn Bennett scored the first run of the game after being hit with a pitch on the first at-bat of the second inning and scoring on an Anna LaCount double. The Beavers scored another run on an RBI single in the fourth and two runs on a pair of RBI singles in the sixth, but LaCount’s hit in the second inning was all the Beavers needed to claim victory.

Reegan Floyd pitched all seven innings for Minot State to improve to 3-2 on the year. She struck out three Mustangs while holding SMSU to four hits and no walks.

In the second game of the day, the Beavers piled on early. Minot started the bottom of the first inning off with four consecutive hits and a hit batter before SMSU finally got a runner out. The Beavers scored three runs in the first, three more in the second and another four in the third to jump out to a quick 10-run lead. They never looked back.

Webber, Bull and Jillian Noel each singled for SMSU while Emma Humpal drew a walk. Bull and Webber each reached second base in the second inning but Bull was thrown out in a fielder’s choice and the inning ended before Webber had a chance to advance any further.

Gabi Dawyduk threw five scoreless innings for Minot State, allowing three hits, a walk and a strikeout. She improves to 4-3 on the year with the win.

Morgyn Otte started for the Mustangs, allowing 11 hits and a pair of walks over three innings. She falls to 5-7 with the loss.

Jordan Bussy pitched one inning of relief for SMSU, allowing one hit and one walk.

SMSU falls to 11-18 with the loss (2-4 NSIC) while Minot State improves to 11-7 (6-0 NSIC).

The Mustangs will look to bounce back when they remain on the road for a matchup against UMary (7-19, 0-4 NSIC) today in Jamestown, N.D. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
