Marshall drops home opener vs. Willmar, 2-0

MARSHALL — A pair of early goals were too much for the Marshall girls hockey team to overcome in their home debut on Thursday night, falling 2-0 to the Willmar Cardinals in Red Baron Arena.

It took Willmar just over a minute to score the opening goal. Avery Olson capitalized on a pass from Ryah Gorans to put Willmar up 1-0 and scored again off an assist from Lauren Eilers and Rebecca Dawson to double the lead.

In her second career start in goal, Lily Stelter faced 22 shots and saved 20 of them, including each of her last 19 shots faced.

Marshall struggled to put the puck on net early. Willmar held Marshall to five shots on goal through the first two periods. The Tigers were able to pepper the goalie in the third frame but Erin Eilers saved all eight of them to finish the night with 13 saves.

Marshall was charged with a two-minute minor in each period while Willmar had two penalties in the third to finish the night with four total, but neither team was ever able to capitalize on the power play.

Marshall (0-1) will look to pick up its first win on the road against Windom on Monday at 7 p.m.
