Vikings sweep DB in subsection quarterfinals

MINNEOTA — The top-seeded Minneota volleyball team continued to make light work of in-class competition in the 3A North sub-section quarterfinals on Friday night. The No. 1N Vikings took down No. 8N Dawson-Boyd in straight sets — 25-11, 25-7, 25-15 — to advance to the section semifinals against No. 4N Renville County West. 

Ella Johnson and Kenadi Arndt led the Minneota front line with 11 kills each while Elivia Faris added another nine. Johnson also contributed three blocks, five digs and a pair of aces while Arndt added a pair of blocks.

Ayiana Hastad led the Blackjacks with five total blocks while Addy Tufto and Reese Johnson each chipped in another three. Hastad also had three aces and nine set assists on the night while Johnson tallied a team-high six kills.

In the back row, Lyzah Sussner covered the whole floor with 17 digs while Abby Rolbiecki was second on the team with six.

Nevaeh Hennen and Faith Myhre helped facilitate the Minneota offense with 22 and 11 set assists respectively. 

Alli Estling and Bailey Bothun each finished the match with six figs for the Blackjacks while Hastad added another five.

Dawson-Boyd stats finishes its season at 9-17 after losing seven of its last eight matches.

Minneota (28-3) will look to remain undefeated against section opponents when they take on RCW at Southwest Minnesota State University on Tuesday. The Vikings swept the Jaguars during their regular-season meeting in Renville on Sept. 21. RCW (19-7-1) has lost three of its last five matches heading into the subsection semifinal matchup.

Canby 3, Lakeview 0

CANBY — Coming off a 10-day break since their last match, the No. 2N Canby volleyball team came out like a well-oiled machine in their subsection opener against No. 7N Lakeview on Friday night. The Lancers took down the Lakers 25-14, 25-14, 25-9 to advance to a 3A North semifinals matchup against No. 3N MACCRAY on Tuesday.

After the conclusion of Friday’s match, Lakeview head coach Stephanie Hennen announced her retirement from coaching after 33 years. This was her fifth season as the Lakeview head coach.

The Lancers’ success in the match came in part due to their offensive versatility. Setters Brynn Kockelman and Emily Nelson were finding all of Canby’s hitters and finished with 18 and 14 set assists respectively. 

Five Lancers finished with five or more kills. Karlie Wollum led the way with 10 while Nelson had another seven. Kockelman, Grace Hansen and Brooklyn Kindopp each finished with five. 

For the Lakers, senior Olivia Hinz led the team with four kills in her final match with the team.

Wollum also led the Canby back line with 14 digs while Aliyah Rangaard had another 13. Nelson and Kockelman each had another nine while Kiara and Taylor Hinz led the Lakers with eight and seven respectively.

Canby served exceptionally well in the match. Rangaard tallied three aces on the day while Wollum, Kockelman, Nelson and Jaryn Houseman each had another two.

Megan Schwartz finished with three solo blocks and a pair of assisted blocks for Lakeview while Kindopp had two solo blocks for Canby.

Lakeview finishes its season at 11-15. The Lakers took down Yellow Medicine East in the play-in round for their first postseason win since 2019 and won nine more games than they had the previous season.

Canby (22-8) will face No. 3N MACCRAY in the North sub-section semifinals at SMSU on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

RCW 3, Wabasso 0

RENVILLE — The fifth-seeded Wabasso volleyball team’s season came to an end Friday night with a straight-sets loss to No. 4 Renville County West in the 3A North sub-section quarterfinals on Friday night. The Jaguars bested the Rabbits by set scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-16.

Avery Carlson led the Rabbits on both ends of the floor in her final match as a Rabbit. The senior outside hitter’s 18 digs were a team-high and her five kills tied Camryn Irlbeck and Alivia Olson for the most by a Rabbit in the match. She was also the only Wabasso player with an ace.

Sara Carlson finished the match with 19 set assists and an assisted block. Irlbeck and Lyla Kittelson each had three solo blocks while Irlbeck also assisted another.

Wabasso wraps up its season at 15-10 after losing each of its last four matches.

WWG 3, Edgerton 1

WESTBROOK — The No. 3S Westbrook-Walnut Grove volleyball team kept its postseason run alive Friday night with a four-set win over No. 6S Edgerton. The Chargers will now face No. 2S Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda in the 3A South sub-section semifinals on Tuesday in Worthington.

WWG won the first set 25-13 before Edgerton evened the score with a 25-21 win. WWG then pulled away by winning the next two sets 27-25, 25-16.

Addeson Jenniges surpassed the 2,000 career set assists mark with a 43-assist performance in the win. She was also one of four Chargers with an assisted block in the match alongside Carlie Ross, Riley Parker and Ella Knakmuhs.

On the finishing end of Jenniges’ assists, Natalie Wahl had 19 kills while Ross had another 14. Wahl was also the team’s digs leader with 13 while Abby Wiggins contributed another nine.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove (23-3) will face Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda in Worthington on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Coyotes’ ended the Chargers’ 12-match win steak to start the season when they first met on Sept. 21 in straight sets.

HLOF 3, MCC 1

OKABENA — The No. 7S Murray County Central volleyball team’s season came to an end on Friday night with a straight-sets loss to No. 2S Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda in the 3A South sub-section quarterfinals. HLOF took the first set 25-15 and, after MCC stole the second 25-22, rattled off two more wins by scores of 25-12 and 25-16.

Emmi Peltola led the Rebels’ back row with 15 digs while Kate Slettum and Abby Loosbrock added another 10 each. Suttyn Schryber and Kate Blankenship also each chimed in with another nine.

Loosbrock also contributed defensively at the net, tying Abby Overman with a team-high three blocks. Thea Schneider added another two.

Schneider’s 10 kills were a team-high while Slettum finished with 18 set assists.

Murray County Central finishes its season at 11-15 while HLOF will face off against No. 3S Westbrook-Walnut Grove in the sub-section semifinals in Worthington on Tuesday.
